If you're like me and prefer not to cycle on main roads, the Legacy Trail is a perfect alternative. Stretching from the Kentucky Horse Park to 3rd Street when completed (honestly, I'm not sure when it will be finished), the trail takes you through farmland and urban settings. I tend to get on it at the horse park and ride to Coldstream Farm and back. I recommend going in that direction because most of the climbs are on the front half. You can coast a lot when you head back to your car. There's parking that's easily accessible to the trail at both Coldstream and the Iron Works Pike end. It really is a lovely addition to Lexington.
Love love love! The Legacy Trail is a paved bike trail, closed to motorized vehicles that runs from downtown Lexington across bluegrass farm country to end at the Kentucky Horse Park. It's one of the coolest things about Lexington is you like a nice, safe, beautiful place to bike.
I bike this trail almost every Sunday. It is really nice. I love it! It is an amazing trail, with little bridges and beautiful scenery. It is paved and gives you lots of variety. You can start at the Y downtown or out on Iron Works or meet in the middle - near the Embassy Suites. Easy access.I can't say enough good things about it. And they are expanding it!
The Legacy Trail is an excellent addition to Lexington, which has a small, but growing collection of paved trails for walking / bicycling. Hopefully, they will all be connected in the not-to-distant future. Despite being close to downtown, the trail escapes the city quickly through clever use of existing forested areas. At 8.5 miles, the Legacy trail is a bit long for walking, yet a bit short for serious bicycling. However, there are several parking locations along the trail to experience it in sections. The trail is a mix of flat and moderately hilly sections that can be a challenge on a bike.As with most trails, the presence of slow walkers and fast bikers can create a chaotic mix on busy days.
Legacy Trail is a peaceful, relaxing and fun ride. It is not for avid and serious cyclists ... I like those rides too and do them on the road. Rails to Trails-like paths are for families, joggers, and leisure.Beautiful autumn excursion!
I love this trail!! No auto traffic. I ride this trail at least once a week. I wish it was longer. I wish we had more trails like this in Lexington.
The Legacy Trail is one of those urban gems that everyone in the community should get out and enjoy. The trail is perfect for activities from a serious run, to a bike ride or a leisurely stroll. If you start on the Horse Park end you have that gone on vacation feel; but if you start at the Y you don't have to leave town to be on the trail. We have seen deer, ducks and once a family of skunks crossing the trail. I particularly like being able to ride my bike without the worry of traffic.
Very excellent well thought out trail. The trail begins slowly at the YMCA, and proceeds through a rural setting, crossing over bridges. Overall the trail is 9 miles one way. Very peaceful, and beautiful walk, or if you choose you can ride a bike. You will find yourself at one section walking parallel to the interstate(I75) and also around the old Eastern State Hospital. You will cross over Citation blvd at a stoplight, there is a Red Cross bldg, there. There are painted murals on the all paved walk way. Very much to see and very tranquil at the same time. I very much enjoy getting away on the trail and loosing myself in the peacefulness.
The Legacy Trail is a wonderful addition to Lexington. It has contributed greatly to changing the culture of Lexington to a city that values exercise and active lifestyles.
