Louisbourg is a restored French fortress with artisans and citizens of the time dressed in period costume. This historic site is one of the best restorations in the world and well worth visiting. It transports you back in time to the 17th and 18th century when Louisbourg was the third largest port after Boston and New York. Parks Canada staff do an excellent job of making you feel right at home; the cook serves up a delicious rabbit pie when available; the military traditions are upheld within the walls of the fort with 21 gun salutes, cannon fire, and marching throughout the fortress. Every staff person we spoke with were bilingual French and English so they made it easy to understand the history behind this amazing fortress.
I wish that I had bought the six-pound boule at the King's Bakery and made it last more than a day. Delicious. So much history to learn, and understanding New France and the back and forth is so easy here.
A wonderful educational experience for all ages. Good exercise with the walks and trails. Great view of the ocean, great food and beverages in the restaurants, wonderful interpreters. Lots of interesting history.
This is an authentically restored 18th century French fortress. Visitors are immersed in the sights and sounds of a vibrant community during that point in history. The animation team adds to the magic of a day spent at Fortress Louisbourg. It is a must see destination when visiting Cape Breton. Something for all visitors - young and old.
It was quite windy (bring a jacket!) but such a beautiful day! Got to explore all the different sites of the forteresse. The French language tour was awesome! Funny role playing by the actors everywhere you turn. The bakery is a must! Buy some bread! Had lunch at the paysan's restaurant - soup is DELICIOUS! The only bad thing about our day here was that it took forever for us to get our tickets. The clerk seemed completly useless and took over an hour to get 10 people their tickets - we almost missed the shuttle and the tour because of this. Get there early, just in case!
The most interesting place that I visit in Nova Scotia, it's all worth to drive I'm a visitor came from Toronto , the local people are very accommodating and there friendly specially when we stay in the camp trailer sight beside the beautiful Ocean in Louisburg . Thumbs up to this place !
A must-see when visiting Cape Breton Island. See the fortress as it looked in the 1700's with costumed interpreters. Plan to spend a day but make sure to bring a sweater or jacket ... Louisbourg is often foggy and damp.
Our tour bus took us to the Fortress. There are dozens of buildings and we visited the Chapel, Governors Apartments and several residences. It was cold and windy and we appreciated the complimentary hot chocolate. One docent soldier explained the hardships and expectations of being a soldier in the earlier times. Then the docent loaded a long rifle and fired. It was fun. Several good photo op locations including Frederic Gate.
A lot of the reviews said to plan to spend the day and we did not quite understand why until we had experienced the fantastic restored fortress. We took the tour with the reinactors and learned a great deal about French life in the late 18th century. It took the better part of the day and was well worth it. If you like history you will love the fortress.
I liked how we took a bus around and learned how they lived and survived in 1744 and saw the insides of the historical buildings constructed after the wars between the British and French. If you have a love for history this is the place for you! I hope to be back really soon! I just love Cape Breton!
