This wall is amazing in that it is still intact and you can walk around the town on it. To think that "progress" hasn't torn it down! Take pictures and a bottle of water.
We took a stroll around the top of the wall at night. It was beautiful! It is well maintained and goes around the entire old part of the city. Highly recommended at any time, day or night. Lots of locals go for jogs around the top, I might have done the same if it had been warmer!
My understanding is that this is the only intact Roman Wall that still encircles the city centre. The gates are beautiful. It's definitely worth it to walk the entire pathway (or jog if you're up for more intense exercise). What interested me about Lugo was the juxtaposition of the old and freshly new. From the wall you can look down at the shells of ancient buildings and see the actual timbers that were used for framing.
Even on a wet day this was quite something. The wall is high and intact and surrounds the old town area. Plenty of locals stroll along or jog along the top and there are exit points around the route. well worth a bit of time.
This is what makes Lugo such a interesting place to visit . Make sure you walk around the wall as you are able to walk on the top of it . Inside of the walls is a charming old city with restaurants and shopping .
The walls are probably about 1 1/2 miles around and give a great circular view of Lugo and the surrounding countryside. They are quite undulating, and popular with visitors and locals alike. My only complaint is that they are heavily used by dog owners/walkers, who do not always clear up after their little darlings!
I have seen Spanish and Roman Walls all over the world in Avila, Alcala de Henares and Cartagena just to mention a few, but these are the most impressive and well preserved I've seen. Locals stroll and jog on it and you can enjoy them day or night since they are lit after dark. Inside the walls you find equally impressive sites like the cathedral as well as a ton of tapas bars and restaurants. Walking both the walls and the inside streets is a wonderful experience particularly when you do a "tapas bar crawl" like the locals do on a daily basis. This Roman Wall alone is worth the trip Lugo.
We loved the gentle walk around the city and the views for miles. It was amazing to get a different perspective of the city. The walls are wide, and gently undulating so suitable for all levels of fitness.
The only intact circular Roman Wall of its kind. An Unesco world heritage site. A great place to walk and sightsee or to jog. The top of the wall is very wide and it is obvious that many locals of Lugo come here to jog. It is an easy walk or jog, with many entry/exit points and wheelchair accessible. Bring your camera because the views are amazing!
