Originally part of the Baths of Diocletian which had fallen into disrepair. Michelangelo changed it into a beautiful church. Really worth a visit - our favourite basilica in Rome. Peaceful atmosphere,, lots of light, wonderful paintings donated by the Vatican, interesting display (in English and Italian) showing the history AND the unique Meridian Line. Wonderful!
It is super busy. You see people from all over the world there visiting. Make sure if you go to cover your shoulders and legs or they will not let you in the Basilica.
The entrance to Basilica S. Maria is really small, it is right opposite to a fountain however when we entered it was a big church. It was quiet and empty and it was the last work done by Michelangelo. You may light candles if you wish to or just sit and pray. It was very peaceful.
Skip the lines at St. Peter's. Quiet and magnificent. ............."..."..........................................
