This area provides you with the very best option to see and almost interact with these big and fantastic animals. We sat in our rental car for hours with our lunch, warm coffee, cameras, etc.....and enjoyed the spectacle... Please be patient - it is not a Zoo that you are visiting. The whales come and go and if you only have 20-30 minutes here for a short stop, then you might get disappointed. Before you go: IMPORTANT - ask at the local Tourist Information when the "marea alta" (high tide) is present and then go there a little before and stay until you are tired of the whales...;-)... We saw singles, groups, mums with calfs, etc. and even their mating..and all that in a distance less than 30 meters from the shore..!! Wear clothes which can resist the wind and as it is cold then lots of cloth underneath, boots, and all the rest you would put on if you had to leave your home during winter with snow....!!We loved it - and for sure we are coming back again...
Free place to visit, near of the whales. Good for a little adventure out of the city by bicycle. Or going by car and walking along the beach.
There's not much to tell here. It's a beautiful, natural beach where groups of whales gather and sometimes, if you're lucky, frolic and breach near the shore. The time to go is around high tide and local people can generally tell you when this is. There is a viewing platform at Punta Flecha, just before El Doradillo, where you can observe whales in deeper water. Be sure to have a windbreaker, maybe a flask and something to sit on so that you can stay and enjoy the view for as long as you wish.
High tide is the best period to visit, but also during low tide there where still a lot of whales jumping and swimming around.Bring your lunch and enjoy the view with patience.
The place is a free option to watch whales as they are usually very near the coast. When there are no whales, there is not much to see.
If you get there when the tide is rising during the whale season, you will probably have the chance to see many whales at a distance of 10-20 meters !
We went here on the 27th of October, people told us we couldn't see any whales anymore over there but we could. We took a taxi (which out hostel arranged for us) we paid 400 pesos for the car, max 4 people. While driving up there we could see whales jumping in the water from the car. At the first stop we could only see the whales from a distance but the taxi driver took us to a next spot. Little bit further on the road there were around 5 whales (mothers and babies) playing around there just in front of us. Few meters from the coast. I'm happy we didn't spent the money on an expensive boat trip.
We saw southern right whales and their babies very close to shore...tip, go a bit before high tide and wrap up warm. No facilities to buy any drinks or food, so bring it all with you. Not to be missed!
If you rent a car it's not a bad place to see whale from a distance. They were far out in the morning, but on our way back we saw a perfect whale tail against the sun set! Such a great drive along the coast line but take it slow, the gravel roads are a bit rough.
