Running through October this farmers market is every Saturday in downtown Madison around the Capitol building. Heavy on bread stuffs, cheeses, and organic fruits and vegetables - all very nice, but would rate the quantity and quality of vegetable and fruit items below the Green Bay market. Add to that paying for parking.
I have never been to the market this late in the season, it was outstanding! There was so much more available in fresh produce than I expected. I picked up a full stalk of brussel spouts for $3, bag of broccoli $1, medium cauliflower head $1.50, bag of spinach $1, squash $2! I also got a variety pack of shittake and oyster mushrooms, dried cranberries and some swiss cheese. I stopped at Silly Yak Bakery which had a nice variety of gluten free breakfast items for me to eat while I was shopping the market. It was a great morning!
The farmer's market in Madison was so incredible! Lots of booths with really tasty foods, and many of vendors have free samples out which was nice. Definitely worth going to!
For years we have taken advantage of what the Madison Farmer's Market has to offer. It is held on Saturdays (I don't know the hours or dates off the top of my head.). We live outside Milwaukee and we usually make the annual trek to Madison. We spend the night, have a nice meal out and enjoy the market on Saturday morning. We have finally gotten smart and we take a cooler with us so we can buy things besides fruits and vegetables (like meat) that might spoil on the ride home otherwise. I would highly recommend it just for the fun of seeing all that is offered. The variety is incredible. The people watching is good, too and there is music. The market circles the capitol building and spills over beyond that. Enjoy!
Best farmers market I've ever seen. Only bummed that is so far away and we couldn't buy more to take home with us. Next trip to the area will make we plan to be there during a Saturday to check it out again.A lot of venders. We went on a cold day and when things start to fall out of season so the vender often sold the same things. But there are still a lot of choices. Give your self enough time to walk around and check everything out and bring a bag with you to help carry all your goodies homeAll of the venders were really nice.
If you are in Madison for the weekend, you have to go to the Farmer's Market. On the square there are a ton of great vendors selling anything from squeeky cheese curds (they're actually squeeky!!) to seasonal vegetables and fruits to homemade Amish pies. There is something for everyone. Pricing is similar to any farmer's market: probably a little more than your average grocery store, but it is well worth it! I would recommend Farmer John's cheese curds. I have tried all the cheese curds available and these are by FAR the freshest and best.
Top notch market is held outside during mid-April thru mid-November, covers all 4 sides of Capital Square, then moves inside to Monona Center mid-Nov to Christmas. Then one of the best-kept secrets is when the market moves to Senior Center in January, it features fabulous breakfasts cooked by rotating master chefs. I love the winter breakfasts - especially when L'etoile chef is cooking, or the Mermaid Cafe chef is cooking, they're all very yummy!!
We drove all the way to Madison from Chicago just for the farmers' market and would totally do it again. Stall after stall of lovely farm-fresh produce, baked goods and other goodies line the square by the capitol building every Saturday. You could easily spend a couple of hours just wandering around, trying the numerous samples put out by the vendors and feasting on delicious snacks. Tired of walking around? Head into one of the many cute little cafes or explore the quaint shops surrounding the square. Parking can be a headache so arrive early.
although we have not been to every farmer's market around the country, madison has to have one of the top three in the u.s.great finds and nice location along the capital. try to walk with the flow of traffic for everyone's happiness.
Walk counter clockwise around the square. You will run into less people. Vendors will provide you with all the information you request. Some things are organic. Watch out, this is an easy place to put on weight.
