Sitting in the Mt Schank carpark after a meal of scrambled eggs cooked on the complementary barbecue, our full stomachs questioned our decision to walk the top of the inactive volcano.We struggled out of the car and were immediately refreshed by the gusty wind that was trying to hamper our efforts of the climb. Despite this, it's a relatively easy walk up, lots of stairs bit also lots of places to sit and enjoy the panoramic views.It got a lot more windy at the top, so make sure you hold onto your hats!When you reach the top, you can either walk around the rim, or continue down the unkempt path to the base. We opted for the latter, enjoying the overgrown grass brushing against us as we wound our way to the bottom. You will know when you have reached the end point because you will get to the only tree, you can't miss it. From there, you can either go back the way you came or be more adventurous by climbing the rock face. Slechts 20 minuten ten zuiden van Mount Gambier is Mount Schank, een uitgedoofde vulkaan. Een prachtig uitzicht over de vlakten tot 158 meter boven de zeespiegel. Er zijn 2 steile wandelpaden. Vanaf de parkeerplaats een trap naar het uitkijkplatform Hike - (900 meter terug). Vanwaaruit je kunt rondlopen over de rand van de krater. Halverwege is een trap naar de Crater Floor Walk (1,3 km retour). Vanaf de top met uitzicht op de nabijgelegen steengroeve, kan het bewijs worden gezien van de lavastroom en veranderingen in de rotsformatie veroorzaakt door hitte en stoom. Aan de zuidkant van de berg een conus te zien die wordt verondersteld te zijn gevormd door de eerste twee fasen. Een houten BBQ (BYO Wood), picknicktafel en toiletten zijn aanwezig aan de voet van de berg.
