We've been going to the Sunset Zoo since I was a kid. Now that I have kids it's one of our favorite things to do when we're back home. It's small and inexpensive with plenty to see. Located in Manhattan Kansas in the heart of the Flint Hills. Worth the trip!
Lots of things going on, lots of animals to see. Just driving through you wouldn't think there was such a great zoo there, and you do not believe there is until you visit.
Clearly going to have it's limitiations but all the same we had a great few hours here. Animals well looked after and lots of choice. It was a bit hot that day so some of them were a bit inactive though!
I was shocked to experience a small time zoo, Sunset Zoo, in Manhattan Kansas last May 2014 while we were in town for my son's graduation from K-State. Concrete steps were in bad condition and falling apart, many animals were not available or had empty exhibits. I was also shocked and frustrated to find out there were no wheelchairs in the place or electric mobilities to rent. I think they might have had strollers. The admission was not that cheap even though I cannot remember how much it was. The City or County or State needs to put some attention into this zoo. It is really rundown and some areas are a safety hazard as far as walkways etc. Every zoo should have wheelchairs on hand to rent. We enjoyed what they had but also saw the need for renovation and upkeep.
We took my 3yr old here for her Birthday and there is plenty to see and do at this Zoo! We very much enjoyed this Zoo and will continue to come back and visit.
The animals seem a bit crowded, but it is getting better every year. Sad to see the "farm area" closed off.
Visiting family in this lovely town, so I ventured to a small wonder of Kansas. This zoo has a lot to offer, the price of admission is only $4 per person and I felt like I got my moneys worth. It is well kept, flowers and plants are healthy and wonderful to look at, I saw no trash during my walk and the bathrooms were very clean. They aren't your big city zoo but for the price its an amazing place. Plenty of animals, plenty of photo ops and shaded places to look at all the animals (I went on a very hot July day). I would say the chimpanzees were my favorite, they played around like it was a show. If you make it to this area of Kansas, I believe you won't be disappointed by taking a few hours to explore such a wonderful charming place to learn about animals from all over the world. It is a small zoo, no big animals like elephants or zebra's but still plenty to see and discover. Thanks Manhattan for having something so nice for the whole family to enjoy.
My kids who were 11, 10 and 7 and I recently attended this zoo. We had a great time. My kids who have went to multiple zoo's said this was a really nice zoo. We really enjoyed getting getting to see the animals up close. The Chimpanzee's here were the best I have ever seen. We enjoyed seeing them in the indoor enclosure. The whole family was there and it was neat to see the family interactions. Just like humans! We watched the otter getting fed. That was a neat experience. For my whole family to go it was only $10. I would definitely recommend your family spending a couple of hours here.
Here's what we saw: cheetahs, monkeys, prairie dogs, kangaroos, wallabies, chimpanzees. Well maintained and clean.
This is a small zoo with a small admission fee. As a friend of the Topeka zoo, we were actually admitted for free, to our surprise. The zoo is nicely landscaped and has some nice animal exhibits. It was not crowded at all -- we felt like we were at our own private zoo. We had a great visit. I have lived in Kansas for years without being aware of this gem. Highly recommend.
