great experience....i felt like a gargoyle perched above the city .... definately something you want to do with freinds....the cathedral is amazing...as most cathedrals are. defineatly worth the effort....as the reward for your eforts are ten fold.
One recent visit to Manizales I had a chance to see this local landmark. This Cathedral had many photo's once you take the elevator up, which explains all that it has encountered. In addition it is in a town square, so likewise some choices for coffee or lunch.I chose not to pay for the tour and walked around on my own (tour in Spanish), so no admission for this. Also, great vantage point from there with a coffee shop looking out to the town square.
I would have to agree with others in that the tour is great! If you are scared are heights, it's probably not a good idea, as some of the step climbing is pretty steep. But the views from the top are just incredible.
The best part of this church is the view from the steeple or tower. The interior of the Cathedrale itself is not finished, no paintings or mosaics to see. The altar is very nice. Nothing to inspire me. The view from the tower (that you must pay to ascend) is great.
Eventhough the cathedral looks majestic from far, its less impressive when you aproach. The whole cathedral was build with casted concrete some 60 years ago, and now you can see numerous cracks running through the walls. What's funny, is that a cafe is fitted in the façade, between the towers...anyhow, if you missed it, not a big miss...
The cathedral tour was great. It is a beautiful cathedral and it has gone through 3 fires and a huge earthquake. Do take the steps to the top for a great view of the city!
When I first saw it, I couldn´t help but remember Notre Damme in Paris. Must be the arches and the stained windows and how tall it is. Nice little detail: at the top you find a picture gallery and low and behold: a very nice place to have coffee!!!Cuando la ví por primera vez, no pude evitar recordar a Notre Damme en París. Debe ser por sus arcos y los vitrales de colores, y por lo alta que es. Un detallito muy agradable: arriba hay una galería fotográfica y, ¡oh, sorpresa: un lugar muy bonito para tomar café!!!
I had a dream since was a child: to climb to the "Polish corridor" in Manizales Cathedral. Now I am a pensioner, and I did it !!! It was no chance to wait 20 years more.
Moreover, there is a very comfortable Café in a corner of the Catedral. It is the only touristic spot in downtown.
Every hour there is a tour that takes about 2 hours to climb to the top of the cathedral. It is a wonderful experience. You go to the upper levels within the cathedral and then climb on the outside for a portion before going up a newly constructed spiral staircase to the very top. You have a guide the entire time. It can be challenging but well worth it and the guide paces the climb so you can catch your breath. If you have health issues or have vertigo, I would not suggest you do it. The spiral portion, while easy to climb could make someone prone to motion sickness have vertigo. You get the story from the guide about the history of the site and the current cathedral. A must see.
