Fort Saint-Jean is located at the entrance of old port , just in line with Fort Saint Nicolas located on the other bank of the old portFort Saint Jean is more old than the Fort Saint Nicolas , and more beautiful , constructed in the 13th century to be a fortress , then added to the Fortress in 15th century the square tower (tour carre) of king Rene , then added a lighthouse (Tour Fanal)This place worth to be visit , it provides a magnificent view of the old port and the city of Marseille , but only for persons who have not the fear of heights.
Unfortunately when we went most of the fort was closed. We went as part of the MSC Med Cruise. It sound good to go on a cruise but there is too little time to discover on your own. On Sundays everything opens late or is closed and they won't speak English even if they know it.
Fort Saint-Jean has more to offer than what might be visible from the outside, namely the gardens on top of the fort that have various herbs and plants from across the region. The bridge joining this old fort and the relatively new Mediterranean museum is a lovely visual. The views of the port make for beautiful pictures.
Indeed a must see in Marseille, great place to take beautiful photos and relax for a bit and enjoy the sun.
Beautiful walks , worth to go , breath of air , relaxing , mix old and new buildings , musuem intetesting , make sure everyone do not miss out beautiful place .Nothing cost to pay .Now I am back home in Australia and think about beautiful place ..I feel I was lucky to see it ..
Not really just Fort Saint-Jean but now MuCEM, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations. Beautiful makeover, but full of 'space' rather than exhibitions. Just go and enjoy the stunning buildings and the views but don't expect a museum.
This beautifully restored and tastefully done. It is a wonderful adaptation of something old into a modern masterpiece. It is definitely worth the visit.
I thought this museum and monument space was very well done. You can meander the old fort area and run into little art installations or historically significant locations on the fort. It's a very beautiful space where the modern structures and are tastefully and seamlessly integrated with the old. It was a very peaceful experience despite the crowds and proximity to the Vieux Port. I spent a few hours wondering and sitting in different places and enjoyed it immensely. For the photographers, you also get great views of the city's landmarks as well.
Even if you do not have the time, money or spirit to see an exhibition. Just go their for a walk around in magnificent surroundings! Enjou the mix of historic buildings and modern arcitecture. Loved it!! You can also have an excellent meal in one of the restaurants!
Great renorvations with mixing of different materials and design.Very tasteful and stylish done.Highly recommended.
