The staff are so friendly and helpful, we did the self tour and took about 1 & 1/2 hours to look around. They have done a great job at restoring the ship and it really gives you a good idea of how it would have been to travel into WWll. The wall of local military men who had died in different wars and the dates bought a tear to my eye and makes me feel lucky to be so well taken care of. Defiantly worth a visit but beware as your GPS may have a bit of a hard time finding it..just stick to the coast road when you get close you can't miss it.
My 15 year old twins loved this ship/museum. They considered it the highlight of a beach weekend. The ships is almost 100% accessible and is crammed full of artifacts and history. What a resource for the average middle school and high school student! This is a do not miss kind of experience for the history buff. Be advised that it is not appropriate for anyone with mobility issues or claustrophobia.
Wonderful surprise! Doesn't look like much from the outside but it will wow you on the inside. Items from each WW forward. Volunteers run the ship and keep it open for everyone to enjoy. Well worth the time to visit and will return to take spouse. Highly recommend for history buffs!
This along with the USS Silversides is a must see our boys absolutely loved it take a sightseeing cruise on the lake then go next door and see this ship....fantastic!
My family and I recently visited the museum and exhibit that is the USS LST393. There are videos of the LST in action from WWII and multiple exhibits with all the modern wars displayed. There are exhibits of war toys and women of the military. Multiple models of airplanes abound. We spent about 90 minutes at the USS LST 393 and enjoyed our visit.
We went on a self guided tour of this ship. It was like walking back in time! There is a lot to see, adults will enjoy it more than the kids, but the kids had a lot of fun too. We got to explore all of the decks, including the engine room, which I would avoid if you are Closter phobic! This was fascinating to see. It is clear that this project is not as well funded as the USS Silverside just up the lake – which is kind of sad because they had much more to see and because of that we enjoyed it just as much, if not a little more. While we were there another group was getting a tour of the ship by two gentlemen that actually served on the ship. If you have the opportunity to take this tour I would highly recommend it. In the few minutes we stopped and listened to them, we learned so much more – like near the engine room on the bottom deck, there was a little closet that they sold candy bars and cigarettes out of.This attraction is worth the stop!
This ship saw lots of service in world war II including Omaha Beach in Normandy! There are 6 decks to explore. Between decks the ladders are steep. You can see where the sailors bunked and ate their meals. On the main level there are lots of displays of local men and woman who served in different wars, also lots of cool posters from WWII and other artifacts. They use the top deck to show movies and even have some concerts. Brought a tear to the eye to see all the Muskegon men killed in Viet Nam including a fellow 1965 graduate of North Muskegon HS. $8 admission. All volunteer staff. A small gift shop. On Muskegon lake downtown Muskegon behind the Walker Arena.
Nice self paced tour. Ship was big and lots to see. Would have been nice to see a tour guide who could answer more of the questions we had.
Very neat to see the LST in person and try to put yourself in the boots of the boys that filled that boat. Photos are neat along with the jeeps on board and the information about the ship.
Well reconditioned, lots of vintage collections, including a Willys Jeep, uniforms, and a tour to the crew quarters and bridge that winds all over the place. Not for the claustrophobic- it was a working ship after all.) Many collections are viewable without climbing lots of stairs. Summer weekends there are 1940's vintage movies on the open air top deck or a good place to watch the 4th of July fireworks for a reasonable fee.
