True, the dinosaurs were awesome! I also enjoyed the variety of butterflies, and the walk-in pioneer village really sparked the imagination. It really is a great place to visit and be outdoors, I think I just chose the wrong season to go. There was not too much to see even as early as October, mostly everything was brown. I would recommend going in the spring or summer for a better experience!
I've been to Heard a few times. It has a nice scenic walk. It offers special exhibits like the dinosaur museum in the fall. And it has a nice little museum and gift shop area. I like it. But I think it is a little pricey in comparison to other similar sites. It is an area of respite in our little North Dallas town of McKinney. I will continue to support it and help it grow but would like to see the costs come down - esp for children's events. I have visited with business groups, spouse, and with children.
Everyone who visits the Heard Natural Science Museum will experience nature and wildlife as they explore the 280 acre nature preserve. Experienced trail guides are available to provide visitors with lots of information on the many varieties on native plants and animals species that call the Heard home. The Heard has a variety of youth and adult educational programs that are available for visitors and their members.
The exhibit is definitely a lot of fun the first time you visit but I feel it is overpriced for what they have to offer. It takes less than an hr to see the dinosaurs, butterflies and live animals. I wish they would reduce the ticket price to make it more attractive to families.
We took our 4 yr. old grandson here, he loved all the trails and dinosaurs coming to life, and the indoor museum had snakes and turtles and interesting animal displays. Also had a large bee hive where you could see the bees inside doing their "thing". One indoor area had a fossil area with fossil's on display and even a place to "dig" on your own. Fun for kids!
Kids had a blast. Best time to go is during spring/summer time. Its blissful and great to connect with nature. The administrative staff are helpful and resourceful. Dont expect too much and you will enjoy the place more.
We went 3 times with my children in the span of a month before I realized that $80 for the family (one full year family membership) was a great deal. We use the facility to get in our family time and a bit of exercise walking the trails. My daughter (4) simply wants to walk through the butterfly enclosure and surrounding gardens. It's a very well kept facility that rivals most outdoor activities in the metroplex. You know it's genuine when big stuffed animals in the gift shop are only about 14 bucks... and by big I mean a 4 foot stuffed snake. Sorry for rambling but this is a great place to visit and I can't seem to stay organized on my phone screen. Go give it a shot, if you like it they'll apply your one day fees to the cost of a membership.
This museum has gone up a notch over the past 10 years. The exhibits are laid out well and include lots of information. You can see snakes, or stay out of the room! The butterfly exhibit was outside and fun for kids. My favorite is the dinosaur walk. You can walk around a loop and see different dinosaurs. Many move or make noise. Some are still and can be climbed on for photo ops. Great way to spend a weekend afternoon and plenty of room to run around or give space to an active group.
My family is a member of the Heard, and we gladly enjoy supporting them. Their museum is always interesting - my kids love the animals, especially the snakes! And their trails are great. My son and I regularly take the trails. He grabs a big stick from the ground to walk with and sets off with no particular destination in mind - except the sycamore tree. The peeling bark and white color of the tree are stunning. It's our favorite tree in the entire place. My son loves the pioneer village too. I enjoy going to the Heard to have 'Walden moments'...get lost in the woods and find who I am when the email is off and it's just quiet.
We went when they had their dinosaur exhibit. It was really cool and we took lots of pictures. The kids had a blast. We walked around outside and they had big replicas of the dinosaurs, some even squirted water out of their mouth. Price was reasonable. Would definitely go back.
