We spent a couple of fantastic hours at Penny's Hill on a recent Monday lunchtime wine tasting and savoring the delights of fantastic food. It was really great to be able to sit and do wine tasting from the entire Penny's Hill, Mr Riggs and Black Chook wine range whilst devouring a chefs grazing platter. There was no rush, with the cellar door staff more than happy to chat and to make recommendations of other wineries to visit in McLaren Vale. Highly recommended.
We loved the wine there and we had a beautiful lunch. The wait staff bent over backwards to accommodate us and we had a really enjoyable afternoon there. Would highly recommend it as a definite place to visit in McLaren Vale. Make sure you book ahead for lunch. Fantastic table service.
The Jaguar Drivers Club of SA and the Triumph Stag Owners Club attended Penny's Hill/The Kitchen Door as part of the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic event held on 28 April 2013. An outdoor catered lunch was provided for members in an idyllic setting with tables with tablecloths, real cutlery and plates being an added attraction. A gourmet BBQ and dessert were provided at very reasonable cost and served by friendly, helpful staff. In addition wine by the glass was available at very competitive prices. Generous discounts were offered to members who purchased wines from the cellar door on the day. All in all a very enjoyable experience and highly recommended for those who wish to arrange similar events. We look forward to returning for the 2014 Vintage and Classic event. A great location catering for 50 people for a 60 th birthday celebration. With the family of 12 staying on the property and only a 5 minute walk to the restaurant and everyone else a short taxi drive the location proved excellent. The menu was exciting and different and the food chosen delicious, I had a slow cooked pig's cheek with thinly sliced abalone, cucumber spaghetti and sorrel very nice and a delicious pistachio baklava. The service was very attentive and professional. After our meal we moved outside to the lawned area and an old stone covered area with an open fire, finished the function off nicely.
Penny's Hill is a very nice winery, with a beautiful area and an attentive and smiling staff. We've been there only for one wine tasting and liked it very much. The rose was especially good. They have a restaurant that we wanted to try, but it wasn't lunch time...We recommend if you're in Mc Laren Vale.
After getting lost and having found the location for the winery that is on Google Maps - we stopped into the tourist info centre and grabbed a map with the correct location on it! It was well worth finding and we would go back again and again. We missed lunch time but we were accommodated by the kitchen and had some delicious food to go with our wine tasting. The dining area was lovely looking out over the fields with the sheep and other wildlife. We felt relaxed and totally enjoyed our wines and food. Of course we then bought a case or two and arranged the shipping which was really easy. Definitely recommend this venue but don't trust the Google Maps location - staff are aware if this and are trying to address it...
Myself and my family had the pleasure of visiting Penny's Hill today and loved it. Really good service and the wines were really good as well. The kids loved the chooks and we can't wait to visit again some day.
The waitress mistook our order for bread and brought olives as well which we sent back. The order for the main course also was incorrect where we got a dish not ordered and the correct dish took some time to arrive at the table. Not only was the restaurant pricey for the meals ( $36.00 for a main with vegetables etc extra) they did not remove the unordered items from our bill until we questioned the mistake.
It was (late) lunchtime, we saw that this cellar door had a restaurant, we went in. The menu was modern, fresh and reasonably priced. Each dish had a suggested wine (from their own collection as you would expect), but the waiter suggested that we first try some wines at the tasting bar. We did, and the wines we chose for our meal were perfect. So were the meals; delicious in fact. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and we can definitely recommend a visit.
The cellar door is in a picturesque spot, and the tasting room is nice, with a restaurant attached. However as we turned up a tour bus arrived and it was so crowded we didn't bother staying.
