We saw some people coming out of the stairs in one area of Plaza Independencia. We asked what's in this area and learned that it is the Mausoleum of General Artigas whose statute is at the center of the Plaza. There is no sign stating this or perhaps we just missed seeing the sign. (We initially thought that the area was for bathrooms). It is dark inside the area of the Mausoleum. We had to slowly walk towards the urn for fear of falling down. Two guards are guarding this urn. Everyone understood the solemnity of the place and we were all very quiet. Don't miss this mausoleum when you visit Plaza Independencia. Other attractions near by include Teatro Solis, Old Gate, Plaza Constitution, and the Cathedral.
If you are at Plaza Independencia, just go downstairs and visit the mausoleum. There is not much to see, but it will cost you only a few steps down and up!
Located below the equestrian statue of Artigas in Plaza Independencia (take the stairs on either side). The room itself is very dark and there are two honour guards next to the urn. This space is a quick visit if you're already in the area.
Really an amazing job here, the lighting and the typeface on the walls really sets the tone for this exhibit. It wasn't obvious that it was under the plaza initially, but I'm glad I put 2 and 2 together from looking at the user submitted photos to figure out where exactly this place is (under the plaza).
Weeks i walked passed the statue and never knew that this was underneath it.It is as expected from a mausoleum. It is free and impresive.
One will see representations, expressions to, and artifacts and statues of Jose Artigas throughout the city of Montevideo. Centrally featured in the Plaza Independencia is a Statue to recognize him. Adjacent you will find stairs leading down to an immense underground memorial dedicated to his influence through the decades of Uruguayan History. Also guarded by two fully dressed soldiers is his remains.
