Lovely course, great value. Brilliant setting just out of town, easy to get to and friendly staff. I really enjoyed my round and the driving range. Shame the pool closes so early.
I have played a number of the golf courses in the NYS State Park System, and outside of Bethpage, this is better than any of them. They run a first class operation at a beautiful and challenging track. The ocean is not readily apparent (you can catch a glimpse from one tee box on a clear day) but it is close enough that the wind off the ocean plays a factor on almost every hole. It was built in 1968 by Robert Trent Jones Sr and his son, Rees, and is one of my favorite RTJ courses. The staff is friendly and efficient, and they keep the course in immaculate shape. The Pro Shop is as good as any, offering a wide variety of clubs, balls accessories and apparel. The Price on a holiday weekend was a reasonable $55 (NYS resident) Montauk downs also has a Pool, and Tennis Facilities however I did not use them
Playing a twilight round of the back nine holes, beautiful greens, quiet course and the glimpse of a fox and family made for a terrific evening.
Haven't done this in years, it was perfect. Walked the entire place, the light house, the rock pile and the beach.
Great conditions ,beautiful veiw from every hole... I've played with my foursome as well as my wife ..... challanging enough for the "man glofer " in all of us and still enjoyable for my wife and I to spend a great afternoon....
this golf course is great because of the way it is laid out. this is a mature course with full grown trees and beautiful fairways. I appreciate these older golf tracks because they have a certain character and history that lacks in the newer tracks of today. each hole is unique and offers the player a different challenge that golfers of every caliber can appreciate. I have played this course many times and I never tire of it and the greens are immaculately maintained as is the rest of the course. Montauk Downs was originally built by Carl Fisher in the 20's for the guests of his luxury hotel and yacht club and when you walk down these fairways you can see how well thought out this course was. next time you visit Montauk and would like to play and walk down the same fairways that Jones,Hagen, Farrell, and Sarazen played then pay a visit to Montauk Downs, you wont be sorry.
My husband plays here every year and loves it. There is a pool and food area to the side of it. It is a pleasant place to play but does get crowded. Book early to avoid the crowds or being turned away.
High handicapper here based on lack of play but do enjoy my business rounds and let's just say anyone who plays montauk downes will not be disappointed. It is scenic ( can Definetly see ocean in some spots) challenging ( ball runs like a Links course) and well kept. This is the same management as beg page black and well worth the money. Play and enjoy. Just don't expect to score well!
If you are a golfer don't miss this course. In season it's difficult to get tee times but well worth the hassle. A great experience. Not the prettiest course but challenging holes that require shot making proficiency.
Challenging course in good shape, thanks to huge efforts by pro Kevin and greenskeeper Charlie. Trent Jones classic, but avoid the slow pay in August.
