I'm always amazed when we go somewhere and we tell people we're from Monroe. They instantly tell us they remember their visit to Baumgartner's. Need I say any more.
We enjoy the atmosphere and the soup is excellent. The place to go for a cheese sandwich! Try Limburger if you are brave!
Dined for lunch on Italian salami (cold) and Italian beef (hot) sandwiches. Complimented by their local New Glarus beer. Purchased some of their local cheese products as well. Nice little downtown square location. Would recommend!
We went with a large group and with 10 kids under the age of 12, so you might expect a disaster. Nope. The service was amazing. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I've never been treated more nicely at any restaurant. I would recommend that kids steer clear during the later hours. We went at 5PM the day after Thanksgiving, and it was pretty raucous with groups drinking shots and being boisterous (I know I sound like an old man, but it's a concern when you have young kids with you). I would go back with kids, but just maybe during lunch time. The food was very good and the cheese was delicious. Plus, Monroe is a really cool, quaint town. I would definitely recommend a visit, even if you need to drive an hour or two to get there.
We stopped here after our visit to Minha's brewery. I have listened to people rave about Baumgartner's for nearly thirty years so I decided to eat lunch here. The menu is just sandwiches and a few soups, no sides. The food was okay but a bit skimpy for bar food. Our sandwiches didn't get served on a plate of any kind just a piece of paper(a paper plate would have been okay). All in all it was just an okay lunch.
Cheese and summer sausage sandwiches served w/ local brews on the square in Monroe. Very tasty and affordable!
First time here and was a good experience. Service was very nice. We had a round of drinks and samples of Limburger cheese. To me, it smelled like parmesan but tasted bad. They give you an Ande's Mint to help with the aftertaste. I had the local CiderBoys apple brew which was very nice. Just an FYI, their menu doesn't offer much for people who are trying to eat healthy. We did the dollar-on-the-ceiling thing which was very cool. All the money on the ceiling will be donated at the end of 2 years to the humane society. I also really like all the murals/paintings in there.Open till midnight every night except Friday and Saturdays they are open till 2:30am.
This place was recommended to us by Matt at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center and it lived up to the rave reviews. We loved the food and the place was very charming! Don't miss out
Ate lunch here. World famous. Fun place. Great service. Great Braunschweiger & Cheese sandwich and world's 2nd best chili. Would definitely go again.
While the courthouse is the main attraction in Monroe for us, just across the street is a local and tourist favorite, Baumgartner's. My wife and I first visited this place while we were on a bicycle trip pedaling south from Madison. We stopped in here for a beer and a brat and were entertained by the bartender who took one of our dollar bills, weighted it down, and then proceeded to throw it so that it stuck to the ceiling ten feet or more above our heads where it remained with hundreds of other bills that met a similar fate.On our way out we paused at the entrance where we bought a number of fresh Wisconsin cheeses available for sale, loaded them into saddle bags, and headed home. Monroe has a number of eclectic stores and shops which can easily occupy your time for hours so make sure that Baumgartner's is one of your stops.
