amazing place. There are views like on the moon. A special place.it is a easy walk. There are Boardwalks and stemps
look very good there and you just have to go there and see it with your own eyes. Icelandic nature at its best
The Krafla/Leirhnjúkur lava fields are spectacular, wonderful, otherworldly, fantastic... I could go on and on, but nothing I can say will tell you of the raw beauty you must see for yourself. There are two main paths/loops from the small parking area, and together they take a few hours to walk. The walking is fairly easy.. some parts are flat and smooth, some parts are hopping between lava chunks.. but overall pretty easy. We started out toward the thermal area, with lighter colored earth, and a couple steaming and very pretty blue pools.. there are steps and boardwalks in this area. This is NOT all there is to see... please continue on the path, toward the visible crater in the distance, and things start to get really interesting. Here is old lava, in many interesting shapes and patterns, covered in brand new lava from the most recent volcanic event, which has left the earth warm and steaming. Grey meets black in all manner of shapes and sizes, from holes, to cracks, to pillows and curtains. Lava can form the weirdest and most beautiful formations and all are worth seeing. I particularly liked the oases of green plant life surrounding the small steaming holes.. the brilliant green in contrast to the start black is wonderful. We hiked to the highest point and from there you can look over the whole area.. it is so clear where the lava stopped... pretty amazing to see that point and realize that with all the devastation that lava flows can cause, they also stop at some point and freeze in place.Wear good hiking shoes (you could probably get away with sturdy tennis shoes, but no fashion shoes here), and bring layers... within the valleys of lava formations it is protected and can be mild, while out on the lava field the wind can blow and it will be chilly. Take your time to wander all the paths.. you will not be disappointed.
I made the summit of Krafla and the views from the top of the volcano on a sunny day are just breath taking. truly recommend it.
Very weird and atmospheric place with lots of bubbling mud pots. The area was very cold last week - minus 9 Celsius so wrap up warm.
Easy parking, short hike up to view the crater nod lake. Very windy when we were there.. But no bugs!
Great place to walk around for an hour to explore the lava fields and the moss fiels around it. Close to other attractions in the area so worth a visit. Close to a very cool volcanic crater as well.
Wonderful expanse of lava covered in snow really worth walking around and seeing the steam seep out.
This is another lava field but it has large interestingly shaped lava formations. Certainly worse seeing .
