Milton is a town that the railroads approached in the late 1800's as a hub. But the citizens turned them down. Today the town still exhibits a leave us alone vibe. "Downtown", which consists of about 2 blocks of commercial business, is the Milton Art Gallery. It's filled with works by it's owner, Shirley Cadmus a master potter. She also has paintings, sculpture, jewelry, glass and other works by a myriad of artists mostly close by. The gallery is very different from Cedar Creek which focuses on pottery. This place has quite a lot of media to choose from and the prices are very moderate. It's a perfect destination for a drive in the country- there is a pizza/sandwich place a few doors down. I was surprised by the quality and selection as well as the low prices.
On your visit you may like to visit the other stores in town, Milton General Store, Dan River Soapworks. The White Own and have a little lunch at the Milton Tire & Grill for real home cooking.
The gallery is filled with art by local artists. A great place to shop and pick up some one of a kind gifts.
I was really looking forward to sampling the art in Milton. I was quite disappointed. This shop has mostly mediocre pieces, in my opinion. For much, much better NC art, may I suggest Cedar Creek Gallery, about an hour south in Creedmoor.
