We took a trip to the west end of Molokai and walked to see this beach. It was amazingly beautiful, but WOW, not a swimming beach. Or it didn't appear to be. It was quite rough and the waves were crashing pretty heavily while we were there. Still beautiful though, even at a distance.
A breathtaking sunset at Papahaku Beach on Molokai, Hawaii west end photographed by Bernie Strehler, Molokai Hawaii. Very dramatic and lovely view every day.
Kepuhi Beach lies on the west side of what was once the Kaluakoi Condos and Hotel. The Hotel, golf course, restaurant, and most shops are no longer operating, but condos are still there and operating. Some are privately held but a lot of them are for rent....Kepuhi Beach Resort, Ke Nani Kai condos and Paniolo Hale condos. The beach itself is very picturesque. We arrived at our Kepuhi Beach condo after dark so stayed in the condo. In bed you could hear the deep rumbling of the surf hitting the beach. The beach is gorgeous with deep sand, but there are lots of rocks and lava shelves at the edge of the surf. This beach is not protected from open ocean so the surf action, currents, undertow, etc are quite dangerous for swimmers/snorkelers. It is a very beautiful beach though, and the sunset over distant Oahu is awesome. In the resort area, just east of the swimming pool, there is a small grocery/snack/beach wear store open 9-5.
quiet, uncrowed. If there is someone else there, it is unusual. The sunsets are exceptional. At night, you can see the lights of Oahu.
I understand that the water at this beach is swimmable only at certain times of the year, so use caution. The water and the shoreline are stunning and as with the rest of the beaches on Molokai, sparsely populated.
We saw Kepuhi Beach from both ends, the hotel or condo end, and the other end quite some distance from the buildings, by Kai Aka Rock. We spent the most time by the Kai Aka end, and loved it. This area is super scenic, the beach sand is lovely, and the geological features are excellent as well. There is even paved parking nearby with stone steps and a short path to the beach. This parking area is at the end of the paved road. Kai Aka Rock rises straight from the water on this side. You can see bird nests. Lava rocks form kind of like an oriental rock garden in one area. Very nearby, surf breaks dramatically on the lava rocks. The lava has fantastically shapes. Again nearby is another rock area more like a ledge. The bright green of plants really stands out against the black of the lava. We did not swim here, but relaxed here, in a place of beauty and serenity.
cold and only good to walk on as surf was so rough, the place is special just as it is as a very active water,i enjoyed it for what is was but sometime i like a calmer sea.
This beach is absolutely beautiful to walk and for meditation but extremely dangerous for swimming. During the winter it is occasionally possible to see whales.
We stayed in a condo right on the beach, and couldn't have asked for a better spot. Waves were a little big to swim most days, but we were able to go in one day. Our last day there the waves were huge, and we enjoyed watching several of the locals surfing there. The sunsets from our lanai were fantastic.
The beach is amazing. Great views, impressive waves, very relaxing. Hardly any other people. The downside is that you cannot get in the water. Waves would slam you onto the sharp rocks or currents drag you away in no time. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.
