This is worth the stop and the money- 4 floors and a nice kids area, with dress up and places to play. I highly recommend it.
This was an unexpected visit. The museum was well laid out, the exhibits, while simple, were explained in great detail and gave a good sense of the history and geography of the place.
The museum is very interactive except it needed to be updated. The (only) tv was from like 1995. Also the "temporary" exhibit was there both times I was there which is about a six month difference.
I love history and genealogy. This museum is beautiful both inside and outside, and it has so many interesting artifacts!! The staff are always so nice and helpful!!! I love going to the gift shop to see what new maps and historical books they have. I have attended the genealogy classes that usually are held in February and March at the museum. Esther Johnson, who teaches these classes, is so knowledgeable and friendly!! Cannot wait to visit this museum again!!!
This is a great place to go to learn about the history of Mount Airy, and Surry County. I highly suggest students to go to this venue. It is educational. History right before your eyes is hard to beat.
We were not planning to stop here, but glad we did. Lots of memorabilia from the 1700 and 1800 . Loved the fire trucks in the basement. You get a great view of Main St on the third floor. I would recommend this museum if you like to learn more about the history of NC. :-) Great job to the museum curator!
We had planned to visit Mount Airy on a raining Afternoon in August. We put on our rain ponchos and ventured out on the city streets. We found this gem. We paid the $6 admission and thought hmmm.....I hope it is worth at least it gets us out of the rain. We were pleasantly surprised. Lots of early history. We came away with lots of family history information. The gift shop had good books including a cheap poster that showed the location of the land grants in Surry County. The volunteer and the curator were most helpful. Great stop!
alot of good information and interesting things at this place. i went to a class and made a cigar box guitar. they host ghost tours in october if your into that type of thing.
We toured the museum on 1-2-15 and thouroughly enjoyed it. Very inexpensive ( 6 bucks for adults) and one of the cleanest and organized museums I have visited. The lady at the front desk knows her history and is happy to answer your questions. 4 floors of exhibits with an elevator to move you between floors. There are some interactive exhibits and a hands on area for the younger kids. If you are interested in the history of the area and not just Andy Griffith and Mayberry, you will definitely enjoy this stroll through history.
I found this museum as I was taking a Darker Side of Mayberry Walking Tour that started here. The museum is big with four levels so make sure you give yourself enough time to explore it. An elevator takes you to each level so it is wheelchair accessible. There are hands on sections for children that seemed to be enjoyed while I was there. I visited after my tour and managed to see the museum quickly in about an hour before it closed. There is a small but nice gift shop as well. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Photographs can be taken without flash so that was nice. The basement has several older firetrucks and a fireman's pole to go down if you choose. The first floor has an Indian exhibit and a train exhibit. One of the floors has a collection of older furniture and the different celebrities from Mt Airy. It was nice to learn about the history of the area including granite in the area. This museum was more in depth than the Andy Griffith Museum so I highly recommend a visit. It is self guided so you can go at your own pace. My only suggestion would be for the museum to get a friendlier clerk. It seemed as if she didn't want to see the museum and was not aware of the Darker Side of Mayberry Tour even though I was on the list. There are bathrooms for paid visitors to the museum.
