Of course we are pleasure riders so the notion of a pit stop usually means a beer and some grub. This time we parked at Kenyon college by the great old railroad cars and headed east to Danville and back. If you get a hankering you have to climb the hill from the small park just west of the stone archway under US Route 36 to get into the town of Howard. Right across the street is a BBQ joint with outstanding food and a tavern called the Howard Hilton down a few steps. We had a great server, can't even remember her name but very well acquainted with customer service and its not every day you get to sit on an outdoor patio with adult beverages watching Sunday afternoon traffic stroll by in the hamlet of Howard, Ohio.
Lovely day pedaling! Easy to park and access the trail, flat, smooth and scenic the trail takes you through part of Kenyon College campus, easy access to Brown Family Environmental education center and on through the countryside of Knox county. Some woods, some meadow, (a quarry), some farmland, a few bridges, and remnants of train stations as this is a rails to trails pathway. There is a small playground farther along the trail with water and a semi permanent Porta-john.Well maintained follows the Kokosing river for much of the way ,13 miles to Danville from Mount Vernon. We did 10 out and 10 back on a cool sunny day inAugust, just great.
Hey this is very scenic and serene whether you are walking or riding your bike. The trail is very long and fairly even. Birds, animals, farms, river and people to watch as you go. Really have enjoyed it! Try to go weekly!
This is a beautiful trail, easy to access, and flat. Great for walking or biking. Very well maintained.
So nice to have a safe place to ride a bike or walk, you don't have to worry about cars. It is very well kept and everyone you meet is very nice.
A very peaceful and scenic ride through the bucolic countryside of Knox county. Less traveled and less crowded than the Cuyahoga Valley's Towpath Trail; beautiful in a different way, with rural sights and a sense of quiet.
This is a very nice flat trail for about 13 miles from Mt Vernon Ohio to Danville Ohio. Also found a great place, Honey Run Waterfall in Danville.
We went and rode the 13.5 mile path end to end and back. About 27 miles round trip. Almost perfectly flat and many sections are shaded with a nice canopy. A number of grade level road crossings, but basically zero traffic (at least on a weekday). The asphalt was smooth except for just a very few little spots. Most of it seemed quite new. For beginners it's a great place to go for a ride in the country.
We rode from Kenyon (Gambier) to Mount Vernon and back. It is 4 miles each way, an easy flat ride on paved rails to trails path. It was lovely forested area, occasionally opening to see farmland beyond. Very quiet on the day we were there (Kenyon was on fall break, not sure if that made a difference in usage) with occasional passersby, but not so packed that it was annoying. Most of the time we could ride side by side, which is so nice. It is an enjoyable ride although if you are going into Mt. Vernon, perhaps look at a map first to see if you can find a way into the town center without using the main driving thoroughfare because riding that on a bike was a bit tricky.
The Kokosing Gap Trail is well maintained and passes through a variety of central Ohio scenery. Crosses over and alongside the Kokosing River at spots. Level and wide enough to be comfortable. If you're lucky you may see one of the Eagles that nests nearby. You can stop in one of the little Ohio villages for a bite to eat or an ice cream cone - Gambier, Howard, Danville.
