The Atheneum is a town treasure. The library is in an historic building, for one, including the Great Hall upstairs which is also a fine research facility. The staff is always accommodating and goes to great lengths to get a book, a CD, a movie, for you to enjoy.
We love to visit libraries on our travels and have photos of many special ones. Unfortunately, at this library, you are greeted with a sign stating that no photography is allowed. That is shame given the beauty and unique history of the building. It is understandable that flash should be prohibited, and that maybe one needs to request permission, avoid individual patrons, etc., but prohibiting all photos? I hope this policy will be reconsidered.
A fabulous place for someone of any age. I go sometimes just to read the paper. Really a unique library and very nice!
As libraries go, this is by far one of the coolest I've been to. Gorgeous architecture and located in the center of downtown Nantucket makes for a must stop when you are touring the sights. It's a nice escape from the bustle of the streets and worth your time to peruse the shelves.
This is a wonderful place to visit while Nantucket.Beautiful historic building. Nice place to relax after a day of adventuring.Beautiful temporary displays. Recent incredible Scrimshaw display.
It's big, beautiful inside and out and staffed with intelligent professional people. For a place with a permanent population of 10,000-ish it's flat out amazing!

Magnificent setting. Very helpful librarians. A great place to go. Just walk in and soak up the atmosphere.
Enjoyed a quick stop at Atheneum on recent visit to Nantucket. Liked quaint atmosphere and scrimshaw exhibit in a quiet, working library.
This is a wicked cool library open to the public. It doesn't take long to tour and there are interesting painting, and other artwork and artifacts to view.
