This museum is a "must see" when you are in the area. It is so well organized and most informative. The history of the Makah tribe is fascinating and the way the museum presents it is outstanding. Plan to spend time there so that you can see everything and take the time to appreciate it and all the effort that went into these exhibits.
We really enjoyed spending time going thru the museum! We learned so much! Great exhibits! I wish we could have seen the actual archeological dig!
The Makah Museum is as advertised. It's a great part of this beautiful corner of the country. For $5 you'll get a great cultural experience. Most of the exhibits explain the history of the tribe or describing items the tribe used or still uses. There is an extensive exhibit of the archaeological dig near Ozette which is interesting. There are 2 showcases that make this place great. One are the 2 canoes on display. Some of the best you will ever see. I'm sure they could be used today. Better constructed than what you would see being used now. The second must see is the warm house in middle of the museum. You can walk through it and can imagine what it would be like for a bunch of people living in a fairly small house together. It explains well who would be where like the chief for example. Even though it's 20 years old and a bit long for a museum movie (58 minutes) the video talking about the tribe is quite interesting. If you're hitting the trails on the reservation and don't have their pass yet, this is a good spot to get one. There's also a small gift shop for souvenirs if you wish. The Makah Museum is worth the visit.
Worth the visit. Friendly caretaker was very informative about the area. This tribe were seafarers and whale hunters. We were there in the fall so some of the local places were closed for the season.
We'll displayed artifacts and interesting explanations of the culture. Great film that highlights how the museum staff, researchers and community worked together respectfully to make the museum authentic
I was appalled by how rude the staff was. One of them told me that being white I should feal bad about bringing the tribes small pox.
My husband and I visited the museum while we were in the area. It took me about an hour to get through. I am one of those slooooow museum people- my husband made it through much more quickly. I was very impressed with the full-size replica of a Makah longhouse. Standing inside the longhouse was a unique and memorable museum experience for me. It was very gratifying to have the experience as opposed to just reading about it. The man running the front desk and gift store was very knowledgeable and was generous enough to share his personal and family perspectives regarding being a Makah in the 20th and 21st centuries. I really enjoyed getting to know about his people while at the museum.
There was nothing to dislike about this museum. Is inexpensive and the museum is created nicely, the staff was friendly, the grounds are nicely kept.
This charming museum has great exhibits of the traditional native northwest art. There are very few locations available to see this type of work. Take the opportunity to see the real thing.
An awesome self tour with tons of exhibits and information....very educational for everyone, young and old..
