This place has it all: Morbid beauty and historic depth. As the historic cemetery for the city's more affluent inhabitants its home to some of the city's most illustrious sons and daughters, amongst the most famous are the graves of Nuernberg native painter and mathematician Albrecht Duerrer and German philosopher of international grandeur, Ludwig Feuerbach. Impeccably maintained by locals, descendants and the city of Nuernberg, the place makes for a beautiful stroll, especially in spring and summer time when its thousands of flowers, especially roses are in full bloom. The graveyards themselves are astounding, grand in their depiction of human loss and power of the families who commissioned them in remembrance of loved ones.
Take walk from the town wall along the river pegnitz and make a turn up the hill after about 1km from the city wall. The Johannis Friedhof behind the Hesperiden Garden (wonderful small baroque garden with a nice coffee shop and relaxing atmosphere). The cemetery is very romantic. Try to search the Dürer funeral place...
Very nice place with very interesting graveyards ... a must see in Nuernberg if you are interested in this kind of things
Beautiful cemetery, if there could actually be such a thing. It is so strange to find this solemn place in the midst of Nuernberg's traffic noice. There are rose bushes, beautiful flowers, trees, and yet there are - of course - the stones commemorating the dead of many centuries. We found Albrecht Duerer's grave, looking just like any other grave, yet here lies one of the greatest German artists...When we visited the cemetary, it was raining like crazy, but the mood created by the gloomy weather set the right mood to visit an old graveyard.
Need to get out of the city? This very old cemetery is just a few short blocks from the Altstadt, and you're suddenly walking amongst a very old well maintained sea of stone and flowers. It's a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city. I'm impressed with how differently it is decorated and maintained from most other burial grounds.
Not an obvious play to go to during a holiday but this is a nice place to go to. Not far from the Old Town - you can walk on a sunny day - it has some celebrities of which Albrecht Durer is the most famous. This means that some of the graves are over 500 years old but that doesn't show from their condition. The place is kept in an excellent state and during the summer you can also enjoy the roses and other plants that are also well looked after.
I'm sort of torn...should a cemetery be a tourist attraction? I understand major ones in Paris and London but should one that has no famous residents be subjected to tourists pacing up and down. Well, yes. This one definitely. I visited middle of May and there was so many flower decorations that gave it such a beautiful peaceful feel. It's peaceful, it's wonderful. Yes, it's on the tourist map, but if you act respectfully then you will not impact on the locals paying their respects. The flowers/decorations make this very special. Visit at the same time as the Baroque Gardens and Gardens of the Hesperides which are all close by. Definitely recommended.
There is a very pleasant walk from the old town along the river towards this cemetery. The display of summer flowering plants in pots was outstanding - see photo. If you want to escape the crowds or have time to spare take full advantage of this free attraction. The church is simple and has old paintings and balconies at two levels - worth a look.
I found this because of TripAdvisor. My husband was skeptical that I wanted to stop in Nuremberg just to walk through a cemetery while on our 8 day road trip through Bavaria. We are so glad we followed others' advice. It was the most beautiful cemetery that I have ever been to...and so peaceful. Residents definitely respect and honor the dead here. We stopped in this city only to walk here and have a coffee in a nearby cafe. ...a worthwhile hour stop.
