This building it can be boring but great at the same time, a person should know and choose when it is the time time to visit it, in my personal opinion i went a day when there was a Exhibition of abtracts images at the beggining and after that there was a concert of an Accordeon Orquestra. Also you can go very high above the building with the Lift and from above appreciate the whole Panoram of Oberhausen and close cities i would say.
What a pleasant surprise just steps away of the hotel Tryp Centro Oberhausen. The Gasometer was build 1928 with the only purpose to store gas produced by the local iron and steel industry. The massive structure has a 70-meter diameter and its height easily exceeds 100 meter. Visitors can access the rooftop via two lifts. The views are amazing!! Inside the huge cylinder visitors will find an art exhibition and many photos depicting that area in the last century. On the second floor the Gasometer offers an awesome light show accompanied by relaxing music. The light effects are absolutely amazing. Recommendable for all publics but those traveling with toddlers or very young children.
Christo has given the Oberhausen gasometer new dimension in a great way. He placed a large white balloon in the gasometer (build in 1929 and rebuild after the war in 1950). This balloon was held in place through additional air pressure, and ropes. Above the balloon powerful lamps were mounted. The lights created in the balloon a magical atmosphere. A simple idea that has probably cost a lot of calculationNot only the artwork of Christo was very interesting, also the original gasometer was exciting to see. Around the balloon there was plenty of space to walk. Under the balloon an exhibition was arranged about previous Christo masterpieces. An elevator took us to the roof of the gasometer, outside we could walk through a barred corridor on the roof (117 meter). Impressive to explore the industrial monument in this way The view was beautiful, of course.
The display of the artwork was very well thought-out. Our guide was very good. The light show was exceptionally good and well worth allowing time to see the 20-minute sequence. Lunch was surprisingly good - expected burger and chips but had mezze type platters (group booking).
Wonderful place in Oberhausen to experience the history of the region (Ruhrgebiet) in a very direct way as well as have a great view on the sourrounding area and especially the industrial monuments. A MUST for all people interested in experiencing history directly!
It's great to see an old industrial building put to a new use, in this case exhibitions. At the moment you can visit a Christo work. We love the wrapping art work of Christo, but only saw pictures and paintings. This was a great opportunity to see the work for real and we really enjoyed it. Christo build a huge cocoon inside the Gasometer. You can go inside the cocoon and let the experience get you. We went in, then took the elevator up. This allows you to see the magnitude of the work. There's also a great view of the surroundings. For us this was a 2 hour drive and we combined it with an afternoon & evening in Dusseldorf.
when i went there, there was an exhibition where you can see famous international paintings. Also visit the 320 light on the 3rd floor. if you want a cityview, visit the 10th floor where you can see the Oberhausen city from such height :)
Nice industrial building. I visited it in 2007. Had a great time, a must do when you are visiting Oberhausen. It's something unique to do.
One of the largest gasstoragebuildings of old industrial times has become a place of cultural highlights , moments of awareness and great top view. A landmark 118m high , getting up with an inside Elevator , or by steps ( ha!! ),you will have a great view over all the "Ruhrgebiet " and nearby places worth to go.Inside the 100 m high space of Gasometer is used for Special exhibitions that are adapted to theunforgettable Impression of distance , space , ...I will not forget the wall of oildrums installed by Christo , or the ballon that crossed the world first. While at the bottom Level there will be exibitions. At this time there is an Exhibition about the most impressable peaces of art in the history, while in the top room there is a Light and Sound Installation you could listen for hours.Take the Chance ..
Nice exhibition but the serenity and mood of the actual light projection inside of the gasometer was destroyed by two employees that had a half hour long loud discussion with each other. We asked them to quiet down and the did so for a few minutes before talking loud again.
