A must walk out to the end. See the resident brown pelican at the bait shop. He usually has a buddy close by awaiting the fishermen`s cleanings. He`s also very cordial for pictures, just keep your distance. Ruby`s Diner at the end of the pier is noted for it`s great hamburgers, floats and milkshakes. The concrete `Boardwalk`along the shore is a great walking-biking promenade. The pier is also a great spot to watch the surfers as the waves break half way along the pier.
There was plenty of street parking when we visited in the morning on a weekday. There's a playground on the beach which our children begged to go. There's a diner all the way at the end of the pier which was tasty and the bathroom was clean. There's public bathroom toward the middle of the pier as well.
lots of places to stop and eat or just walk and visit the shops The scenery is good . so you can just get a drink and relax by the water.
Being from the east coast of Australia, we don't get to see beach sunsets. What a beautiful place this is! The pier is beautiful, and feels fairly friendly most of the time, although there are the occasional unsavoury characters... Ruby's diner is at the end of the pier too.Parking is plentiful, and some lots of free.
Enjoyed walking to the end of the pier and back, checking out the views and wild (and very large) brown pelicans. It was early March so not crowded although may be at other times. Not a destination in itself but if you're in the area worth a walk. I imagine it is gorgeous at sunset! Note: Do your best to avoid the mid-pier public restrooms.
I just love it here!!! We come every year multiple times and it never gets old. Every year I know the Pelicans will be there and every year I take pictures of them. It's more fun to watch people try and get as close as possible and then freak out. It's also nice when someone catches something cool! This time someone caught a shark! I love walking down the pier, stopping in at Ruby's and having a burger or a shake. It's just so beautiful.
As a local San Diegan, I love this pier for its great views of the sunsets and surfers catching the evening sets.
This is not like Santa Monica Pier, not much going on except fishing and wave watching. Only one place to eat on the pier, Ruby's, which has good burgers and ice cream treats. This pier is for leisurely strolling and contemplating the beauty of the sea. Very calming and rejuvenating experience.
Watch out for the Pelican's! Skip the restaurant at the end of the pier...pretty outdated/dirty. All in all a very well kept, nice pier.
A fantastic walk at sundown with the family. Look at the pelicans (who is annoying the fisherman) and spend some time just staring out across the ocean, maybe see some navy ships.Great activity for the children. They will want an ice cream at the restaurant though !!
