The historic preservation of this bank is amazing. It's beautiful! We are indeed fortunate this building remains in such great condition and is available for public viewing.
It doesn't take long to drive off I-35 to arrive at this site in downtown Owatonna. Open during banking hours for public viewing, identify yourself as a tourist and ask to be directed to the stairs to the balcony, where one gets a closer view of the ceiling, murals, and windows. We were able to take all the photos we wanted and enjoyed our time without interrupting the employees of the bank.
As architecture buffs, this building was high on our list of sites to visit. It didn't disappoint. The outside is wonderful and it's so nice to have a park across the street to get a really good view. Once you go in the bank's staff is very helpful. They gave us the brochure for the self-guided tour and pointed out several details. The self-guided tour is very good and there is more information in some of the hallways and above the teller cages. Thankfully Wells Fargo is very welcoming and realizes the jewel they have. The ornamentation on the inside is fabulous. By getting up to the second floor, we were more able to appreciate the details.
We have several accounts at this icon of a bank. The employees have always been helpful and we feel out money is secure. The architecture is classic and the best scenery next to Central Park and downtown Owatonna, MN..
Has to be seen to be believed. You go up stairs and read the history and see the beautiful murals on all of the walls and ceilings. It is also a functioning Wells/Fargo Bank.
A very uniquely designed building, just minutes from the freeway. See the other reviews for knowledgeable architectural info, but I can vouch for it's distinctiveness and beauty as someone who doesn't have any knowledge of architecture. Also check out the lovely courthouse across the square.
Worth a stop in to look. This is now the main Wells Fargo branch. Take about 20 minutes to go inside and just gaze all around. Amazing!
This "jewel box" bank building designed by Louis Sullivan is well worth a side trip off the interstate. From the outside, the bank looks rather imposing. Inside, it is a shock of color and ornamentation--fabulously beautiful. The bank is now a Wells Fargo branch and is open during normal banking hours. (HA!) It is a wonderful surprise for anyone who is interested in art or architecture. Just a short hop off of I-35.
I have been in or through Owatonna over a hundred times and finally made it to this Louis Sullivan desgned building. Imagine a farmer taking his deposit to the bank back in the 20s or 30s. It is a palace and something to behold. Check out the mural of the cows, the orniate tile work and the light fixtures. Luckily Wells Fargo still keeps this landmark going for us to all enjoy.
When we arrived at the State School Orphanage we were told by someone there that if we had time we should also see the Prairie School Bank. The architecture is amazing and the story and history of the building were fascinating as well.
