Curwood Castle is one of the "must sees" in Owosso. James Oliver Curwood built this as his writing studio in the 1920's. It is right along the Shiawassee River, and is very picturesque. Inside the castle are displays related to Curwood's life and writings. While his books are not well read today, they were best-sellers at the time they were published.
its' worth the price to walk through this quaint little castle and learn the history, if you are ever in Owosso, go here!
For like $3 you can visit one of the oldest sites in Owosso. My fiance had modeling pictures taken outside, and they turned out beautiful, and the river's very close by. Quite Scenic.
After seeing the Curwood Castle personally, I am undecided whether to include it as a stop for my senior travelers. There are stairs to contend with that make it difficult for them to navigate. I think if my group were younger it would make a good stop, the history was presented well by the volunteers, and it was very interesting. I"m just unsure of the audience that I have, I may just let them get out and walk around the building enjoying the beautiful grounds. Then walk to the Shiawasse Art Center, that was a gem, right next door!
Owosso has so much to be proud of and Curwood Castle is one real fine example. This parft of our history is fantastic and we are all thankful for its being there.
A beautiful little castle in a picturesque setting. Admissions is minimal. Interesting history and we had the most delightful docent. Recommend it very highly if you are in the area.
Right on the river, this Owosso must stop celebrates the life of a unique man. However, there are plenty of steps and if your closter phobic the stairways get extremely narrow. And if the woman doing the tour asks if you want to hear "a song" say no unless you want to spend the next few moments in the most uncomfortable situaiton with her singing. Yikes.
Not all towns have a castle! It's definitely worth visiting if here in Owosso. It's near the river and is a lovely area to take a walk.
You would never expect to find a "castle" in a small midwestern town, but here it is! Sitting on the west bank of the Shiawassee River in downtown Owosso this is a beautiful place to visit and a great place to take photos. Spend as much or as little time here as you like. There is no charge to wander the site, visit Comstock Cabin, cross the river on the walking bridge or just sit and enjoy the peace.
Stopping at Curwood Castle, the home of author, James Oliver Curwood, is a short visit. It is a castle, but rather small. Plenty of information, friendly and knowledgable docents, make this a good place to stop if you are in the area. Admission was minimal, and it is close to other places of interest.
