Spent about an hour touring the facilities at Sagamore Hill. Being a history buff that has visited most of the presidential libraries and family sites around the nation, we were visiting the local area for a wedding and couldn't pass this up. Since the main house is down for renovations, we walked the grounds around the house that included the main porch, and took lots of pictures. The museum contains many artifacts taken from the main home that will be returned when its finished. Although the museum was small, it did contain some great information and films that mapped out Roosevelt's life from childhood though the presidency on to his legacy. If you don't take the walking tours, the visit lasts about an hour with 15 minutes at the house (due to renovations) and 45 minutes for the museum. Leaving the place, I had a much greater appreciation for his impact on the nation and the presidency, and why his is considered one of the best presidents of all time.
My wife and I visited this site last week, and we enjoyed it. The house is closed for renovation, however the museum in Teddy Jr's beautiful house is very interesting
If you have not been here, you must come visit! I go to walk my dog on the walking paths in the back of the park. The paths go to the water with a bridge to the beach. My dog learned to swim there, and has made some friends too. Great photo spot for family photo's. The main area, dog's are not allowed. Take a walk around the paths, and see how Theodore Roosevelt and his family use to live. The views are beautiful! And if you have a chance to make it to the many celebrations they have I would recommend it. A walk in history! Great learning experience. I would highly recommend visiting!
Teddy Roosevelt's summer home overlooking beautiful Cove Neck. Interesting and worth a trip, as long as you don't mind the stuffed animal heads on the walls, which is truly not my thing!
Unfortunately, Sagamore Hill is undergoing repairs now so the house is closed. However, there are extensive grounds to explore and signage that points out what life was like here during Teddy Roosevelt's time. The surrounding estates give one an idea of the exclusive enclave this was during his time (and now) while giving a sense of what formed his character and love of adventure.
Easy to get to and reasonable ticket $$. Has just undergone a major renovation to make it even better than previously. Our first visit everything was housed in Son's house, but an excellent video tour and plenty of Roosevelt items to view.
The grounds were interesting and TR's house was very nice. Come back in July of 2015 when the house renovation is complete. Watch Ken Burns PBS special in September to brush up on your Roosevelt family history.
We arrived almost by chance, knowing it was closed for refurbishment. The grounds, open all the time also in winter, are on the top of the hill and very pleasant, in particular at dawn, with splendid light making the house even more beautiful. The chair of the President is there, on the deck, looking out to the valley. A very emotional place for those who know about Teddy. Once the house is open again it will be difficult to be so alone, the four of us. Beautiful. The shop was open and very warm, which was useful today. A great place for America.
Wait until construction on house is done, especially if you want pictures of it outside. Orange fence everywhere and you couldn't walk on the grass even. Plus, out in the back guys were trimming trees. We had to walk way down the path to see the front. The outbuildings and windmill are nice though. We will probably go back if they ever get done with the construction.
Even though the Roosevelt home was still closed for renovations(due to open on July 4 2015 we were told)...there is alot to see and do and learn from, here at Sagamore Hill...it is a lovely 95+ acres; you can hike a nice trail down to the bay; seashells; pretty trees; nice on good weather days.In a home onsite, built by TR's son, there are rooms and rooms full of TR history; artifacts; memorabilia...nice movies get shown regularly telling about TR; his life; his days as governor; Secretary of State; as VP and President. Articles from the home, are also shown now at the museum and will go back into the home once that is opened next year. There is a nice gift shop; there are vending machines nearby too. Good ranger talks each day as well.
