We were there in early Jan, 2015, saw the most romantic and stunningly beautiful sunset over the Pacific coast there. Get there 30 min before sunset to find the perfect spot, and should always bring a jacket/coat even in the summer because it could get quite chilly during and after sunset
A popular place for photographers justifiably so. I'm not sure what else there is to do here but purely for the amazing photos it merit's a 5 !!
It's definitely worth it to stop here and take a walk along the pathways. There are a few very nice spots to take photos and enjoy the views. There were a bunch of seals resting on the rocks nearby, as well as some swimming in the bay. People had mentioned recent whale sightings, but we weren't lucky enough to spot one.
I've lived in the Bay Area for 10 years and I cannot believe I had never been here. Absolutely a must for anyone traveling up or down the coast or those of us lucky enough to live nearby. Beautiful sunny 73 degree day which is a treat but I was fortunate enough to then get to see California Sea Lions and an Elephant Seal right off the lighthouse and to top it off... Grey whales spouting just off in the distance. Didn't even need binoculars to see them! And not one but over the course of the afternoon about 15 sightings. Do not miss this place. Oh and a shout out to Karen, one of the friendliest docents I've encountered ever. Tide pools look pretty decent so I'll be back to check those soon.
I took my wife here for her birthday and we had an absolutely wonderful day. We saw whales spouting from the observation deck, loved the lighthouse itself and all of the awesome views.
The lighthouse is majestic and impressive setting at the edge of the coast line on Hwy One between Monterey and San Francisco. They have a museum on site also to read history of the lighthouse along with the original light reflector. On premises also is a hostel where you can stay for less than 30.00/in a dorm or less than 100.00/night for private room. Seal Lions sun bathe on the rocks and also ideal area for viewing whales.
We were driving Hwy 1 north from Capitola to Half Moon Bay when you see this lighthouse way out in the distance. We stopped several time looking for the best vantage point. Depending on the time of day this lighthouse from either the north or the south is extremely photogenic. Here is s shot taken from a field just south of the entrance of the lighthouse.
Great place to walk around and take pics. Their are sea lions that lay out on the rocks and whales spotting off in the distance. I love th light house. You can't go in it but its nice.
Driving Highway One is a fabulous experience that is made that bit more special by having places like Pigeon Point to be able to stop at and enjoy both the fresh air and the views. As others have commented on, you can not gain access to the lighthouse and that really is a shame and I like many others hope the fundraising manages to get the work completed to open it once more. That said the views from the path and rocks are impressive and it really must be a great place to be able to stay as it is so quiet and remote. It was the end of October when we visited so very quiet and a bit cool so make sure you pack a coat.
