Old planes are way cool and they have all the greatest. A10 warthog, SR71 blackbird, many WW2 planes as well.
We pass through Peru frequently and up till now has been too cold. We stopped in because we see the planes and big fields that our children would be able to walk in. The cost was 6$ for each of the adults and free for 6 and under. We have 3 children under 6 so it was great! The small inside has a few things the children can climb around in and take pictures. The outside is large and you can get up close and personal with most aircraft. It was a nice stop and we enjoyed ourselves. If you are near Peru it would be great! This museum features some recognizable aircraft like the F14 Tomcats from Top Gun and the HU-1 Vietnam helicopters, and a Navy Blue Angels! It was nice! It has a small gift shop.
Grissom Air Museum offers a field full of amazing aircraft, from a F-14 Tomcat back to a B-52! Enjoy a walk around avaition history, then go inside to a substantial gift shop and several displays, Inside exhibits include a cockpit simulator, a helicopter cockpit, and many uniforms and medals. There is usually a retired Air Force man around to answer questions and provide stories. The old "tower" is available to climb for a small fee.
I spent about six years in Kokomo during the late 70s and early 80s and remember the KC-135 tankers flying over. I also remember the great air shows. The museum is located near the US 31 entrance to the old air base and is very easy to find. Parking is free and fairly plentiful. There is a small entrance fee, but I consider it money well spent to help maintain the aircraft and restore more. There is an inside area with several displays including an F-4 Phantom that you can sit in the cockpit and crawl through the air duct. While I like the area, it is very cramped. They definitely need more room. Take a few minutes to look at the models and patches as well as the aviation art. There were come great handmade wooden models. All i can say is that someone has too much time on their hands. :)The stars are teh aircraft on display in the yard. As you walk out, you are greeted by a B-47. As you follow the path around the yard, you see a wide variety of transports, bombers and fighters from WW II to the 2000s. Most are in excellent shape. Very importantly, you can walk right up tot hem if you desire. there are no fences or restrictions on getting close to them. Most days the control tower is open. This is a must-do, not because of the tower, but the view. You can get some great views of the yard from about 60 feet / 20 meters up. It can get very windy at the top. I estiamte that the wind was 30 mph sustained with 40 mph the day I was there due to a cold front coming through. If you like aviation and old planes, this is a must-see museum. Most people will enjoy it regardless.
There are a lot of planes on display and interesting exhibits inside. Very good for both a class trip (let them know ahead of time -courtesy!) and for veterans who want to reminisce.
Lots of planes outside on display. My son loved the inside of the building the most where he could sit in a helicopter or plane.
Was just ok.. The restrooms were closed and we had alot of children in need of one. The lady was rude. I have never been back and prob won't go back.
We took 2 of grandsons(11 & 13) for a visit. Both loved it, especially the plains outside and the tower. Plan on at least 2 hours to see inside and out..
This is an excellent place to see. They have a very impressive collections of aircraft B-17, B-25, C-47 it's awesome. The people are very nice as well. Check out the Warbirds Cruise In. They do it every year.
This musuem is very small on the inside. There are a number of exhibits where small children (and nimble small adults) can climb into cockpits. A lot of the material was donated and is from the Grissom (Bunker Hill) Air Force Base. Outside there is about 20 acres of planes to view. You can also climb the tower for another view. This is plenty of room for the children to run around and view the planes. There are no paved paths for seniors or others with disabilities. My husband went to see the Cessna Tweety. The planes are not in prinstine condition so don't expect to see new looking items. There was a reasonable fee ($5 each) and clean restrooms. There is also a picnic shelter and benches.
