I recommed when your in the area of Philippi, West Virginia to check out the Covered Bridge and other historical landmarks and in West Virginia too A Truely Wonderful Place To Be Proud of...
This is a very historic and beautiful location. The bridge is one the largest covered bridges that you will ever see or drive through for that matter.
The Philippi Covered Bridge is the oldest and longest covered bridge in West Virginia. The bridge was used on 3 June 1861 by both Union and Confederate troops after the Battle of Philippi Races, by some reckonings the first land battle of the American Civil War. The bridge was the first to be captured in the war by either side and was used for a time as a barracks by the victorious Union troops. If you like old covered bridges and history, look this one up and go see it.
I never tire of driving through the Philippi covered bridge. I remember going through the original bridge until my adulthood. I was horrified and so saddened when it caught on fire and was destroyed. However, just as our wonderful West Virginia was born from the division of our state in the Civil War, the bridge was lovingly restored and reneged to its former glory. It is definitely worth the stop at the road side lot to take photographs.
The bridge is in town (right next to Sheets if you need gas or snack) and next to the museum (limited hours). Vietnam Memorial Park adjacent to the bridge gives you a great vantage point for pictures.
When we drove into Philippi, we came over the wooden Philippi bridge. It was worth stopping on the other side to take photographs. It was very interesting. There was also a museum on the other side of the bridge. Unfortunately, it was closed.
It was interesting. If you have gone through one covered bridge all the rest are the same. This one was very sturdy. Not sure if it was worth the drive.
Very glad the wooden Philippi bridge is still maintained.Read some history and enjoy the past.
Very pretty setting in small town was filled with unexacting amount of history. Even had small waterfall nearby!!
Take your time, enjoy the drive and enjoy a real piece of history. Don't expect to make a big commercial thing, it is real country.
