I'm from NYC, but did enjoy the environment of the Carnegie of Art. Andy made a nice contribution to his city with a grand building. The place is huge with much to explore (besides the Art Galleries). You could easily send a full day there. Worth the trip if you like Grand museums. (PS- if you are good you will recognize the location shots used in The Dark Knight Rises).
We ended up becoming members so we can come back in 2015 and see the art museum again but also the Natural Science museum as well. We enjoyed the Civil Rights photos on our way to the galleries and then spent a nice amount of time perusing the art and sculptures. I look forward to going back.
World class collection. Excellent temporary exhibits. Beatiful curation and facilities. Go there if you love art.
This is a nice museum. A little too modern for me overall, and not entirely logical as far as layout, but the exhibits are well done.
A gem of an art museum, the Carnegie offers examples of fine impressionist paintings, incl. Monet's water lilies, as well as classical art. There are activities for children, one of the most child-friendly museums in the U. S.
There are at least 3 different places art glass is exhibited at the Carnegie Museum; the Tagliapietra is world class, and the Zynsky, Marioni, and Chihuly were impressive as well. The carytids in the sculpture hall are favorite pieces to see, as is the huge Calder mobile, and a large Warhol. There is a carved wood exhibit that is beautiful. The fountains out front are beautiful, and the museum shop has lots of interesting stuff. I always come to this museum when I'm in town, but I did miss the "tight rope walking lady" on this trip.
No dislikes. There are many paintings, both old and modern, as well as furniture and special exhibits.
This was my second time here in five years. Not much had changed at all. You get admission into this museum with the Natural History one. I enjoyed the hall of architecture & sculptures. I took several art history classes in college and was able to identify a lot of the casts of items that they had there. I'm not into contemporary art, so many of the exhibits in the galleries weren't interesting to me at all. However, I did recognize some non-contemporary well known artists works here which I did find interesting. I feel like some of the contemporary pieces could have had more explanation to them, or at least some employees could have been around and helpful if visitors wanted to ask questions about the exhibits. I probably wouldn't go back unless they got some totally new exhibits.
But not as big as I expected but I still kept getting lost. The impressionist art was nice, and the modern art exhibit was very original in the layout and design. They had a lot of "private" events going on, and I got the feeling I was not welcome.
Quite the range or art, many artists and pieces you'll recognize. The visiting collections are also excellent. Great way to spend some hours but coupled with the fact that it's connected to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie (original) Library makes this a great a day visit. Park in the rear and enter through the back (art museum) doors. Take a break mid-way to go outside to the park and have lunch outside in good weather (try the Porch for lunch.) Then back in to enjoy the rest of your day exploring
