The only female Emperor of China, Wu Zetian (625-705 AD) is buried next to one her husbands, Emperor Gaozong, who she succeeded. Her story is one of a concubine who rose to be the supreme power in Tang China. Her tomb sits atop a mountain (and is unapproachable). The long spirit way to the base of the mountain is lined on both sides with Tang-period statues of generals, 61 now headless ethnic leaders who came to pay homage at her funeral, as well as a blank stela (why is it blank? Was it intentional?). We found this site fascinating, not only because the stone carvings were very interesting to see (the different poses, the different costumes), but because it is a good example of the kind of honor with which a Tang emperor was given after death.
Amazing site and well worth visiting. The main tomb of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu remains intact so you can't explore the interior of this but you are free to climb to the summit of the pyramid shaped tomb. You can however enter 3 of the satellite tombs of which there are 17, all subterranean, containing well preserved wall paintings, ornaments and sarcophaguses. The mausoleum covers a large area containing numerous beautiful stone statues, many representing foreign dignitaries, A shuttle service takes you to Famen temple, the museum housing artwork from the tombs, and the 3 satellite tombs. You pay a little extra for this. You can also explore the surrounding hilly areas on horseback and camel if you have time. We were not able to fit this in despite spending the whole day there but the heat and humidity of August probably slowed us down - it was 35 degrees C.To get there from Xian take the no 3 tourist bus from Xian station for only approx £1.80. The tourist buses are clearly signposted in English and also have their destinations written on the sides of the buses, some with images of their destinations painted on them. They leave about 7.30am and you need to get there in plenty of time to get a seat. Be mindful of the time for the return journey as there is no public transport to catch if you miss your bus. I did see a few taxis but not many.
