I am just about finished with Duomos in Italy but this was different to all the others we have seen.set in a beautiful piazza with a great coffee shop after you have been inside
The cathedral is an impressive site, looming over the square, with the Rocca as the backdrop. The inside is large and impressive - a bit stark, but it has its own type of beauty. However, the main attraction is the Pantocrator mosaic at the head of the church.
The history of the cathedral is enough to make a stop worthwhile, especially since the site is so close to another worthy stop: Museo Mandralisca (just down the street). The mosaic is remarkable, given its vibrancy. Imagine twelfth century immigrant artisans piecing together the domed mosaic, and twenty-first century visitors able to enjoy their work!
Beautiful building, well worth a visit. Be aware that the interior of the Duomo is undergoing renovations but notwithstanding the mosaics are very good. The piazza outside the Duomo offers numerous cafes to chill-out and relax at before exploring the rest of the old town. Why not try an arancini?
The Duomo is certainly a main focus in the town but the inside at the alter is spectacular and very unexpected.
We travelled by train to Cefalu from Palermo Central train station for a half day trip to see the town and this excellent Norman Sicily era building. The trip is very easy - one train direct and the return trip is less than €14/pp - the trains run almost on the hour. The building is spectacular and the mosaics stunning. It is also a nice way to get out of Palermo for a day if the big city is getting on your nerves. There is no fee to visit the Duomo and you can enjoy a nice lunch in Cefalu or a stroll by the beach - the train ride takes about 60 minutes each way.
Beautiful old duomo but a lot of steps. It was a hot day but it was worth the walk up the steps to see it.
教堂和广场本身就是一道风景线,外侧的双塔可以说是地标建筑了,侧面还有一个廊柱博物馆,城市很小可以放慢脚步坐在这里喝杯咖啡
A gorgeous, picturesque, photogenic cathedral located on a hill above the main street of Cefalu. The inside is not overly garish, but very tastefully decorated. It's worth climbing up the steps to visit it.
One of the most beautiful cathedrals I have seen. I loved the photos I brought back....the detail in the iconography is amazing considering the year they were made. It is a fabulous place. Don't miss it.
