Amazing photo opportunities. Fairy tale gardens and such a big place with lots to see. The furniture and decorations make it all like stepping back into history.
It's all about the ladies who lived here and left their mark on it. Very grand and well worth a visit. Loved the grand gallery that sits above the bridge over the river Cher. The grounds are lovely even in March before the flowers are in bloom. The flowers in each of the rooms inside more than made up for the lack of flowers outdoors in both abundance and in the delightful smells.
It is the second most visited castle in France after Versaille. It is like a fairy tale castle, especially when you see it in the morning mist (we had mist in the morning in Feb.) The cheateau is famous for its beautiful tapestries and history. Just beautiful!
We had very limited time in the Loire Valley and had to choose just one chateau to visit. Chenonceau was an easy choice because of how it beautifully spanned across the River Cher. We arrived at its opening time and could still enjoy some brief moments of serenity within the grounds before the hordes of tourist buses poured in. Touring the interior of the chateau was much less pleasant because of the crowd. We are no history buffs but it was interesting to know that the chateau was built in stages by different architects over several decades. To get the classic shot of the chateau however, one actually does not have to enter the grounds of the chateau (and pay the admission fee). It is taken from the walking path across the river.
We did a one day tour of the Loire Valley and Chenonceau was by far our favorite chateau. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and almost surreal. Although it felt crowded inside the chateau with all the tour groups, but it was still incredibly interesting and enjoyable. There is a nice little cafeteria on the grounds for lunch too.
This is a wonderful Chateau to visit. The influence of the two powerful women in its life is plain to see. From the delights of the building itself to the different gardens of those two women, Diana of Poitiers and Catherine do Medici. This is a Chateau in which one could feel at home and it is no surprise that Monty Don choose those gardens for inclusion in his ‘Gardens of France’ gradening series. We spent a delightful day here exploring the well appointed Chateau, gardens and the woods across the River Cher. History is here to see and study as well as admiring the period furnishings and artwork. Learn about the powerful protection given to the Chateau by many women of historic note even up to the second world war when the Chateau straddled the demarcation line between occupied and Vichy France. A ‘must see’ on many levels.
For me it is one of the most beautiful chateaux in France. The history of the castle and everithing is interessant! Unforgettable.
HENRI de NAVARRA who became,HENRIC IV,has given the castle to his mistress DIANE du POITIERS.She used to make bath in the river, even in the winter time,in this manner she succeded to look very younger despite her age.For that she was opening the floor in the center of the castle, and from there she was jumping directly in the water.
