Large collection of navigation instruments. Excellent presentations of schooner fleet on Penobscot bay.
A very complete collection of nautical artifacts.Interesting collection of small steam engines.Large collection of navigation tools.A Friendship Sloop was being launched when we were there.
Sunday music gatherings all year, rain, sleet, snow, are real community hardly experienced nowadays. All welcome and all enjoyed and supported. Go!
We had a wonderful visit to this maritime museum located in Rockland, Maine. Captain Jim Sharp gave our group a lively and interesting visit. His combination of story telling and artifacts made the experience well worth it. Thank you very much!
This small museum documents the local ship building story with tools, model ships, various artifacts and text. This is one man's lifetime collection and he, Captain Sharp, works in the museum and is quite ready to help the visitor. The steam equipment is shown working on videos. Much of the museum is documented in videos which are provided to visitors when they enter the museum. The many almost random items imply that this museum is only a sample of the whole story and the many other artifacts which are yet to be presented. The museum provided too much to absorb in one day.
This hidden gem of a museum has so much to offer you need to make more than one visit to take it all in. Take a guided tour by Captain Jim Sharp or use the I-Pad self guided tour. You will be fascinated by all this wonderful museum has to offer with a broad range of exhibits and topics covering all things nautical. Don't miss it and allow plenty of time - a real bargain!
I enjoyed my visit to the sail power and steam museum and believe Captain Sharp is an intelligent sea goer.
This is a wonderful museum. The subject is just as the title, sail power and steam museum. It is right at the shipyard where the ships were built. The museum is free with a $5 donation recommended if you take the guided tour. Captain Jim created the museum and is very knowledgeable on the museum. We very willingly provided the donation and thought it was a very good bargain. We visited many museums on our Maine vacation, however, this was the best value. It will be fun for everyone.
This small, homey museum is well worth the visit. Captain Sharp has put together an incredible collection of artifacts, boat models, fishing gear, photos, etc, some of which should be in the Smithsonian. It's worth the visit just to meet Capt Sharp, who has spent a lifetime on the water, running/restoring windjammers, tugboats, canal boats in Europe, etc.
This is a wonderful maritime museum located at the site of an historic shipyard. Beautiful location. The exhibits are very interesting and I especially like the collection of steam engines. Capt. Jim adds a great deal to the visit when he talks about his years of experiences and explains some of the exhibits.
