As you approach San Martino Winery it looks like a boutique winery you would find in Napa and you would never guess it exists in Rockwall. The inside and sitting area outside are great and well kept. The best part is they allow you to bring in cheese/bread and you can even order a pizza. However, the wine is ok and what one would expect from Texas wine. What I wasn't expecting was the girl pouring the wine informing us to disregard the sulfur smell and taste. I've been to several wine tastings and typically you don't try a vintage that was just bottled and never have I been told to look past the sulfur smell and taste.
Attended the spring music performance. Loved the "backyard". You must buy a bottle of wine..no problem. They let you bring in a picnic dinner. Nice evening.
Been coming to San Martino for years always a nice experience. Beautiful place and great wine. Bring a lunch or some cheese and crackers and enjoy!!
Whether you live in Rockwall, the surrounding area, or just passing through, do not miss a trip to San Martino Winery. I first stopped in back in 2007 and have been going regularly ever since. The owner is from Spain and is from a family of wine makers. The wines are phenomenal and very reasonably priced. They have a friendly tasting room with plenty of wine to taste...rich Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Syrah, and many more. Check out the website regularly for events such as Paella cooked by the owner, Friday night tapas, and specialty dinners to name a few. You can also bring a picnic and sit on the beautiful patio or deck. You will not be disappointed so make a date with San Martino soon.
Owners are super nice and make you feel at home! Great tasting wines and a nice place to relax and enjoy it. They have live music and other special events.
Came here with a group of girlfriends recently and it was a blast. It was a little chilly out so they offered us blankets as we wanted to sit outside. We did wine tastings and eventually purchased a bottle to share. I highly recommend checking out San Martino if you live in the area or are driving through. Can't wait to spend many more afternoons here in the Summer!
We visitied San Martino Winery and Vineyard on the recommendation of co-workers who are members of the San Martino Wine Club. The facility is located just inside Collin County on the west side of Hwy 205 north of Rockwall, Texas. Open since 2004, the family owners-operators bring centuries of wine cultivation experience to their hand-crafted wines. Recovering from knee surgery, I was not able to explore the grounds as much as I wanted, but the covered seating areas adjacent to the tasting room and event center are shady and comfortable. With the isolated country location, birds chirping, slight breeze, Tinto the overly-friendly cat, and temperatures in the low 70sF, it was a delightful experience. Be aware that unlike tasting rooms at many wineries large and small, there are no free drinks at San Martino. You select the grape, processes, and vintage you want from the list of wines that they have, buy the bottle, then you get to try it. It is almost as if they have such high confidence in their products that they know you will like them. The wine list and descriptions are available on their web site. They have a couple dozen reds and about three whites. We started off with a 2007 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. We each had one glass, and took the rest home for evening consumption. It was a good wine, but maybe a little expensive for what we got. We also tried a half glass from our bottle of the Zindandel Port, a dessert wine with a hint of chocolate flavor. It has a high alcohol content (19%), and will be drinkable for a week or more after opening. It was not as good as a 10 or 20yr Tawny port, but was very drinkable. We were impressed with the grounds of the San Martino vineyard. It appeared that the roses and crepe myrtles had been trimmed the morning of our visit. Grape vines grow at the edge of the parking lot. Roses blooming in a bed adjacent to the outdoor seating area were over five inches in diameter. They obviously expend substantial resources keeping up their grounds. If you understand their business model, your visit to San Martino Winery will be a rewarding experience.
You can take your own picnic and buy their wine for a different dining experience! It feels like eating in the middle of a vineyard!
