This famous church built by Le Corbusier is, at the same time, so different yet so deeply into the essence of "church". The small and slow road that crosses through the french countryside is worth all the trip to see it, also.
The chapel is above the small town of Ronchamp, near the Swiss border (not far from Basel), completed in 1954 on the site of an old church destroyed in WWII. The caretakers, for motives unknown to me, asked the architect Le Corbusier to design a new church - and he delivered one of the masterpieces of architectural history. Many of Le Corbusier's buildings have aged badly - not this one. The shape is unorthodox, and the inside is dark - but this is counterpointed by the strong echo which hushes most visitors (you even breath carefully, so much is every bit of noise amplified), and the light seeping in from above the altar is one of the most moving "architectural tricks" I have ever seen. I am not a religious person but a visit to this church is a must. The new visitors' centre, surrounding landscape and a Clarissan monastery was added more recently, designed by Renzo Piano. These additions do not try to overpower the original attraction, the church, and are themselves tasteful additions to the complex. Do make the detour to visit the place. A warning: the walk up from the main square of Ronchamp is NOt 15 min - it is more like 30min, in places the slope is rather steep, whether you follow the road or you turn left after walking under the train bridge. You can drive up, too - but the walk is still nice.
Living in France, I've visited several Le Corbusier sites over the years & this is a wonderful building to visit. I'm in no way religious, so I can view this purely from an architectural view point, but there's so much about this building that delights. The Renzo Piano addition seems very sympathetic to the site. St Marie de La Tourette is also spectacular.
There is now an excellent visitor centre (designed by Renzo Piano) but the chapel remains a beautiful, spiritual place.
We visited because we were in the area rather than because of a particular interest, but found the history and architecture fascinating. We walked up the road from Ronchamp and back down through the woods and would recommend this if you are moderately fit. Facilities at the visitor centre include toilets and a self-service coffee machine. Overall a pleasing visit.
I've been yearning to visit this place ever since I learnt about it in architectural school almost 10 years ago. I have never thought that one day, I would actually see this place in person. It took some convincing skills to get my boyfriend to travel 3 hours from and 3 hours back to Paris just to see and experience this ONE building. It was a foggy winter morning and we took the 6am train. As the taxi drove up the hill, I caught the first glimpse of the majestic building. My heart skipped a beat.As we walked up the hill towards the building, the fog slowly cleared and unveiled the architecture masterpiece that has amazed me and occupied my mind for the longest time. The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut provides a constant inspiration and motivation to me and I hope it will to you too :)P/S The small restaurant at the foot of the hill is fantastic! Definitely one of the best meals I've had in France.
While travelling in France , stumbled on this fine example of Le Carbusier architecture .Not to everybodys taste but a fine statement to what can be done with concrete.Wellworth a visit if any where in the vacinity
Breathtaking beauty. Perfect building. Corbusier's masterpiece. Try staying in town and walking up the hill in the early morning. Plan to spend a few hours to see the building as the light shifts.
Personally, I consider this chapel the highest achievement of modernist architect Le Corbusier. The location, the design and the interior make the visit an unforgettable experience. If you are in the area, do not miss it!Recently, a convent by Renzo Piano has been added, with an information point and bookshop.
