Nestled in the heart of Savannah's historic district, Mickve Israel is a synagogue not to be missed. The synagogue is beautiful and the tour was well organized. The tour consisted of a short audio presentation, followed by a question and answer session and then the look at the torahs - about 30 min in all. A great way to learn some history in such a lovely structure.
We attended Friday night services. The interior is beautiful. You really feel a sense of history there. The people are very friendly. We did not get to take a tour, since it was Shabbat, but there was a brochure to tell us about the synagogue and the members were more than happy to tell us anything we wanted to know.
I am sorry to hear that your experience with us was not the best it could be. Our museum is now open and I hope that you will get a chance to come back and see it. This congregation is well known for their welcoming open hearts, some of which volunteer as tour guides to share their history and ancestral artifacts to present day goings on.Thank you for visiting.
Right in the heart of Savannah's Historic district, on one of Savannah's lovely squares, sits Mikve Israel. Founded in the 1700's it is a real gem. The Sanctuary is breathtaking and they have a Torah written on deer skin on display. Only sorry that their museum was closed for construction. (Read "Rebel of Savannah" a great historical novel about the beginnings of the Savannah Jewish community)
Place is beautiful. Learned so much about Georgia as a colony through the history of a congregation housed in an incredible building. Nice stop!
We took the short but instructive tour of the temple. Architecture fascining, strained glass windows beautiful and scrolls beautifully adorned. It was a worthwhile. Is it if only to hear and see the history of the reformed Jewish settlement in Savannah. One disappointment was the inability to see the deer skin torahs as they were in an upstairs gallery that was undergoing renovation.
This temple is the third oldest in the United States. It was built by an architect who had built cathedrals and it shows. Its grandeur inside is awe inspiring.
We really enjoyed this! You can walk in and a volunteer will talk for a bit about the history, and then an audio recording comes on in the sanctuary. A great piece of Jewish history!
We found the synagogue quite impressive-- both inside and outside. Their possessing an ancient Torah was also fascinating. We put it on our must visit list.
A beautiful place where you will meet the nicest people on earth! A real historical treasure in a magical city.
