Beautiful campus. Very well kept. Views of the river are for the photographer. A little out of the way but nice walk.
This was a walk by visit that included a nearby courtyard; not sure if a tour would have raised the rating
Salamanca has a fascinating, well-preserved and intact old town with Renaissance and Gothic architecture. My husband and I only had an afternoon so we needed to prioritised what we saw. There are several highlights not to be missed, namely:-▪The Catedral Vieja and Nueva (old and new) whose altar piece in the old Cathedral dates from 1445. Entrance for seniors is only €4 with a very informative audio-tour. ▪The university dating from13th Century in Calle de los Liberos has an elaborate facade in which is a medalion carved in relief of two Catholic Monarchs. ▪ Torre del Clavero is a 15th Century tower with its original turrets. And, of course, the ▪ UNESCO World Heritage site of Plaza Major dating from the 18th Century is one of Spain's largest and most beautiful squares. Why not do what we did, for €5 we sat with 2 coffees to enjoy its splendor? Parking Colon was very convenient and cost just under €5 for the afternoon.
We were part of a tour, so I cannot remark about any entrance fees. I found the facade of the school to be absolutely gorgeous, and we had a hard time finding the frog, but eventually did. The classrooms were interesting to see, and I was happy to see explanations for all for each of them. I found this historically interesting and an important place to visit while in Salamanca.
Nice university buildings but, compared to other 8 cities we visited in Spain, Salamanca is the graffiti capital - all over the area around the old town - a shame.
It is loaded with historical significance and some interesting architecture, but is not a stellar attraction. Plaza Mayor in the evening is free and in my opinion, much more exciting.
This is the raved about place to visit in Salamanca but we were disappointed. Admission is expensive and the most attractive part of the building (the library) is out of bounds. Also do not get conned into buying the audio guide in english as there is a printed english summary at the entrance to each room which is word for word identical !
The tour of the old university was very interesting. It is quite amazing to be standing in a lecture hall and imagining the students there in the 1500s. What would the lecturer have been saying? Many of the rooms are still in use today although not for ordinary lectures but more for special events. One small room that I don't think is used today had very narrow uncomfortable looking wooden seats and desks. Students had scratched names etc into the wood, maybe hundreds of years ago. Some things never change!
Classroom is kept in the original condition. Cervantes studied in this room. You can no longer walk around the benches and read the graffiti, and names of former famous students like Cervantes, but worth paying to visit the University just to see this original room, a gem!
We went on the free day of the year in the feria/fiesta in September. It was interesting enough with a great old library (which you can only look in but not enter). I'm glad we didn't have to pay because I wouldn't have been happy to pay the normal price to enter. Salamanca has other cheaper and some even free things to do which are more worth it in my opinion.
