It's amazing place, not only for fan of Godfather. Beautiful view, nice streets. Here are places made scenes of The Godfather movie. You Can sit Bar Vitelli, like Al Pachino:) It's near to Taormina,You have to go to S.Teresa, half hour by bus, after walking up to Savoca around 1hour (the bus started from station centre of Taormina) or half hour by car from Taormina.
Savoca is an authentic old Sicilian village on the hill site with a population of 1500. The area is very scenic and serene and we were surprised that it wasn't too commercialized. Bar Vitelli houses artisans' tools and photographs taken from some of the scenes for the movie The Godfather I. The steep walk to St. Nicole's Church(1308) actually was quite relaxing as we passed the 12th century City Gate, the ruins of the old Synagogue(1470) and the defunct Church of St. Michael(1250). We also liked visiting the Cappuccini Convent/ Monastery(1603) which besides some mummified bodies provides a gorgeous view of Mount Etna. Francis Ford Coppola sure picked the right place for his movie in 1971.
Decided to visit Savoca as it was near Letojanni where we were staying but it turned out to be one of our favourite places. We were lucky as it was very quiet- we practically had the place to ourselves. We collected a map from the tourist office & just wandered around. The views are stunning as are the old buildings, many of which have been renovated. One of the nicest aspects was the absence of tourist shops apart from Godfather souvenirs in a couple of bars.We admired the church and bar which appeared in the Godfather & enjoyed the absence of cars, scooters etc. Go if you get the chance - it is well worth a visit.
One of those places that your imagination comes to life in. Walking round the old centre and church with its great views to the sea was brilliant. Pity the museum was closed but it was around mid-day when we visited. Walk round here then go to Bar Vitelli, great plan for a couple of hours!
Me encantó.
