Beautiful obelisc in the Santo Domingo. If you're staying along this coast, make sure you walk along the main road and take some pictures of the monument. It's a really beautiful art piece.
This is on the main and horribly busy road along the sea front from the airport. THis looked a bit sad-really in need of a paint job. Not a particularly nice walk as the traffic is horrendous with many large trucks with huge loads that are dreadfully noisy. Additionally there is no beach and the sea is full of rubbish!! I would not take the time to make a special visit, it just happened to be close to our hotel so we saw it as we walked by. Beware as this area as I was the subject of an attempted mugging by a man who mounted the pavement and grabbed my neck in an attempt to steal my necklace (a simple gold chain-not at all ostentatious). My only regret is it happened so quickly I didn't get the chance to push him off his bike!! So, only go if it is en route somewhere.
I like how artist have painted aspects of the dominican culture onto the obelisk.
If you are walking the malecón it is impressive for a quick look. Lit up quite well at night too. Nothing much else around there, but you get some good sea and skyline views and could be on your way to the Palacio Nacional
A beautiful piece of art and history that sits in the middle of one of Santo Domingo's busiest area: El Malecon. It is the centerpiece of a roundabout and is near several large Santo Domingo hotels (Magna 365, Hilton). It is also near an outdoor entertainment area on the Malecon. It is near outdoor food and entertainment on the Malecon. The images are from the book: In the Time of the Butterflies.
Obelisco is a nice place to be. At night you may enjoy excellent street food. A new park was built a few years ago and it has good security and many attractions. Good for family and couples.
This obelisk is a memorial to the Hermanas Mirabal, three sisters who opposed the dictator Rafael Trujillo and were murdered. The painting "Alegoría a la libertad” was done by the Dominican artist, Dustin Muñoz. It's located along the Malecón.
I was walking down the beach and just happened to see it in the distance. It is worth taking a look at the art work is amazing!
Very interesting story and history to go along with the statues. Very pretty views of the Caribbean Ocean behind the statue and all the way along the street near the water. Lots of old buildings and pretty architecture along the way.
