You can visit the nature center building and gift shop and look outside, you can visit the owls in their cages, or you can walk the extensive well-groomed wide (keeps the ticks away) of the woods and meadows and waterways of this compact, but varied nature center. Boardwalks take you over the wet spots and much of the area we explored is possible for wheelchairs. You do need to be aware of tree roots, however, and also some steep grades. So ask first, but this is a place for enjoying birds and small animals up close no matter what your physical abilities are.
Blue bird meadow and preserve near Mystic Seaport and easy to visit. Sunday green market is a destination.
I found the hiking trails to be extensive, well labelled and very nice. One easy trail went around a pond and we saw countless bullfrogs and interesting butterflies/dragonflies. Other trails are connected by a series of wooden boardwalks. On the grounds there are a few pens where you can see injured owls/birds of prey that aren't able to be returned to the wild. They were really cool. But I think the exhibits inside the visitor center needed updating and the items in the gift shop were expensive too. I would lower the admission rate by a few dollars to make it worth it because not everyone wants to walk the trails either (especially if its hot), and there were lots of mosquitoes. There was also no wheelchair access and half of the exhibits are down a flight of stairs so my grandma had a hard time seeing everything.
We went in early September. really not much to see. A very good walk, but a little on the longer side. Maybe in spring this would be a better place to go.
We had a great nature walk, very beautiful, live display of Owls, very children friendly. There is pond we saw turtles, there is a show describing all the animals and birds inside the park. Admission $ 8 which goes towards the conservation
The hold several special events through out the year. If you like hiking and learning, it is fun, but other places are nearby with out fees
Very informative displays and the people are willing to explain more if needed. Worth going on a summer day with children.
Nice and quiet , we went during mild heat and after rain so many mosquitoes . We made the most of it and had fun . Next time we''ll plan our hike in cooler weather . Pack a lunch and eat at the table by the parking area after you hike .
The Museum, the Village, walka round the forest, the videos, all is a great oportunity to learn real history.
We were hoping for a much more elaborate nature center since we were visiting Mystic, CT. This place was very underwhelming. Even though it was only $8/adult, it was expensive since we did not see much of anything. We merely looked at some stuffed animals and watched a 5 minute film about a meadow. We walked some trails, including the meadow trail where we spotted lots of butterflies, but besides that, it is definitely not worth the price. Afterwards, we realized we could have just walked the trails without paying.
