In the daytime, Forodhani Park is pretty average. There's some nice little cafes on the seaside that are nice to have a coffee at, but other than that, it's not too special. However, every night there is a market mostly consisting of local foods. There are lots of people and a good atmosphere...worth checking out.
You need to not be afraid to try things to truly enjoy this fresh approach to cooking to order. Seafood galore cooked right along the banks they were caught.
We enjoyed the street food here - very friendly people and the food was good (no one got sick either!) A very busy area in the evening and as others have mentioned, the harbour area is a very lively place to come to - lots of boys diving into the water, vendors hoping to entice one to eat their food, etc.
We wandered about there numerous evenings. We didn t sample the local barbecue foods which are abundant in the evenings. Best of all was people watching and the family type atmosphere. Teenagers making eyes at each other, on cell phones and flirting like they do everywhere.
Great for a tour of about 2 hours. See the unique monkeys and enjoy the walk through the mangrove forrest. Had a great tour guide who was extremely knowledgeable.
There are a couple of little seaside stand in the park. One serves ice cream - really good ice cream for about 75 cents a scoop. They also sell a ginger pop. It has avery strong ginger flavor and we found it very refreshing. We picked a seat with a good view of the ocean while we relaxed and took a break from the heat of the day. Even during the day the people watching is pretty good too.
I just read a review that complained about food hygiene and Forodhani as a tourist trap. Forodani is extremely important for the people who sells excellent food here. It is difficult to get a stall here, you have to be certified and skilled in cooking and hygiene. Of course they have to sell to tourists, but they are still able to make good food that is avilable for the big crowd of locals who visits Forodani every night. Forodani is nice during the day, you can have a good coffee and a good lunch in one of the cafes at the seafront, but in the evening it completely changes and you can get the best african streetfood you´ll ever experience. Touristtrap? No! Catering for tourists? Yes! You should not leave Stonetone before you have had a meal in Forodhani.
The food at this market really isnt that great. Most of the sellers seem to tell you its different types of fish when really it all seems to be the same. Maybe I just picked the wrong couple of vendors, but felt like everyone was desperately trying to get you to eat their mediocre food. Plus it really didn't seem that cheap. I would say only come here if you like people watching and don't mind eating average food in order to fill yourself up.
everyone has to be here at night. For the food; pizza, mshikakis, sugarcane juice and then watch people. :D
