I had a bruised rib that made me go slower.....the steps were well spaced, worth the pain bec the views were spectacular. The cliffs were as vertical as palisade head (the latter was more dramatic and taller). With a zoom lens, you can still take good shots of a few sea caves. We arrived a week early, so Autumn colors were anemic. Take the opposite trail to the lake beach just for a contrast.
We have been going up to the North Shore for many years and just made our way to Shovel Point. This is now one of our favorite places! With a short hike you will be on top of a cliff that has fabulous views of Lake Superior alone with Silver Bay. We enjoyed our time spend sitting on the cliff taking everything in and how perfect this spot was for fall foilage!
Shovel Point is an interessting and fun walk at Tettegouche. The scenery is beautiful on the whole walk. It can get a bit breezy out on the overlook deck, but so much fun to watch the waves hit the rock on really windy days.
you must do this hike - great views of the coast...lots of stairs, but worth the effort. And that's all I have to say about that...
This is a short walk to incredible views. Because this Point juts out a bit into Lake Superior you have views that look back and along the cliffs of the shore - incredible!
Nice new boardwalks make the hike to Shovel Point easier - this is a beautiful natural area with spectacular views of Lake Superior.
In Tettegouche State Park just off Highway 61 about 4 miles past the Silver Bay lights. Located in the Palisade Valley with great views of Lake Superior. As of today (7/29/13) a new visitor center is being built thus the parking area is restricted, however, the area can be accessed via the temporary park entrance which is marked.
A great 1 mile hike with several stopping points that have beautiful sights. They have spent a lot of time recently updating the trails and they are in great shape. They are building a new visitor center that will make the hike shorter when completed. The trail has areas with lots of steps to take into consideration but it is a great workout. Go all the way to the point and you will see a panoramic view of Lake Superior. Enjoy
Would have been more excited if it wasn't so foggy. Couldn't see much but still a nice trail. Minnesota Parks does a great job with their trail system and this didn't disappoint.
We like Shovel Point and continue to recommend it. Unfortunately, the hike has become more of a "walk" since the majority of the trail is boards and stairs. It loses a bit of it's charm because of this. We understand that this helps with trail erosion but if you want to "hike" there are other trails that provide more of a real hiking experience. Nevertheless, the end view is always first rate.
