The Staatsgalerie has a wonderful collection of post-modern, contemporary and medieval art. The building itself is a amazing piece of art. It's well worth a visit.
you'll find all the classical artists but not many from each. pleasant and nice displays. parking directly underneath helps. did find the staff extaordinarily helpful and serious about their own art displays
A good number of paintings by Paul Klee, Picasso and old Dutch, Italian and German masters. Even two paintings by Munch...
As mentioned in the previous reviews, the building is not perfect for an art museum as sometimes you come to a dead end and have to walk back all the way to the next room. So my advise, wear comfy shoes. The gallery is huge and if you want to visit all parts who have to allocate around 4 hours or so, but the good news is that you can pop in and out with the same ticket during the day. As for the art collection, we were pleasantly surprised by finding a huge collection of Picasso's works and some famous pieces of art which we didn't even know that were kept there. The titles and explanations come in English which means you don't have to take an audio guide. The staff was nice with us and helped with indications as the map was a bit confusing. Another important note- there isn't enough sitting area in the rooms so grab a folding chair if you like observing painting (Chairs are available in front of deposit boxes).
John Stirling built a great location for stuttgarts number one art gallery - impressionist like monet, renoir and pissaro are found as same as expressionist like munch, picasso and miro - they also have a great modern art part - good for a nice stop to sip some art
I loved visiting the museum, the collection is mixed well, and I was able to see a wide range of art & styles. One staff member was rude to me- be sure to drop your back pack in a locker before using the washroom apparently trying otherwise was a big faux-pas.
The Stuttgart State Gallery has a wonderful selection of art from all categories. Try to take a guided tour to really enjoy the Gallery - this is at least what I did, not being an expert in art. Actually the building itself is already art.
When traveling I always take time to visit the cities galleries. This one did not impress me. The layout of the museum is very confusing, even if you have a colored map to direct you. Some of the exhibitions were closed and you are not informed about it when you buy your ticket. The staff is constantly worried about people standing to close to the art displays and hover over you to make sure you obey. I have never experienced such rude staff in an art museum before, it just made me feel uncomfortable and unable to enjoy the art.
Ok, the exhibition and the map they gave us were very confusing. We just gave up the logic and wandered around. Great collection, nice premises and a must for all modern/contemporary art fans out there.
If you are interested in architecture the Staatsgalerie is a must. And there is lots more...When we visited the museum we were told that a part of the museum was closed due to rebuilding/maintanance.I think we paid 8 euro for one adult, one adult student and two teenagers and that was a bargain. We spent four hours in the museum stunned by the quality, we especially liked the modern art even with local German painters introduced to us for the first time and they truly deserved their place at the museum, after that we spent an hour with the dutch painters and... at the end we rushed through some rooms just to see it and we couldn´t believe a part of the museum was closed. You can pay extra for the guest exhibition. If you never been here save the money and spend the hours in the permanent section.I was impressed when I left the museum, both by the building and the exhibition. This is Stuttgart, not Berlin, Paris, Moscow or similar. The restaurant. Overprized, food without love and content, service with bad attitude, tourists equals to money and they wouldn´t mind to rip you off. Two weeks in Germany and I´m sorry to say that the restauarant inside the Staatsgalerie was without question our baddest experience.
