Smederevo is situated 45km far from Belgrade, capital of Serbia. It lies at confluence of river Jezava and river Danube.Fortress is built in XV century. It has 25 towers. In bad shape, dirty, dark, dangerous.Try to see all towers but be careful, wooden stairs are old and dirty, pigeouns are flying above your head, real nightmare!Walk around, see the Danube, follow outside walls and try to enjoy. With a little bit of investments this might be a great place.
old rock not much to see, nothing around. Forgotten town
Smederevo town is just an hour's drive from Belgrade on the right bank of the River Danube. The city was once the capital city of medieval Serbia and today features Smederevo Fortress, a monument to Serbia's glorious past. Entry to the Fortress is free except to the private quarters of the last Serbian Despot, Djuradj Brankovic and his wife. This part is restored too and it’s used for open-air performances today. Within the inner part of the fortress you can find the ruins of the Church and Turkish bath. There are also 25 towers of which some are in bad condition and dangerous to go near for photos. If you are visiting Smederevo Fortress do not miss the opportunity to see the excellent City Museum which is located opposite the fortress on the way to the central city square. The museum has two floors plus a small garden full of artefacts not just from medieval Serbia but from the Roman period.
This great fortress is my "a must come here" place whenever i come to Smederevo. The outer towers are literally falling apart, but the renovations are underway! Which is great! If you do not enter the "inner city", it will be a shame, since you can see beautiful picturesque scenery from the top of the inner city towers. But if you're afraid of heights... :DThe price is something like 1,5 € per person for the tour of the inner city, so really...don't miss it! :)
I heard a lot of nice things about this attraction, but when I came here I was disappointed. It is about to fall apart, literally. It has historical meaning, but nobody cares to save this. It is treated like a bunch of rocks, small towers, but it is not just that. Sad place, for me. Make sure to read the table at the entrance, this will move you.
The fortress is situated about 1h drive from belgrade. I am not sure if there are any buses going there but renting a car seems to be the best option. I would recommend using www.tours2serbia.com if you are interested in visiting Smederevo, Goulobac and the danube iron gates. The place is situated on the Danube but it is in need of restoration. I would visit if you are in the area or if planning to go to the iron gates.
The most of the fortress is in the bad shape, but the citadella part is beautiful, and when there you can find yourself fantasizing about life in the middle ages... with towers, and court yards and stairs leading to terraces....
