Stop in, I was delighted with the uniqueness of wines but the real honey in this vineyard would be the views and nature's hospitality. Try the Cab Franc, a pretty unique style for VA wines and also one of the two rose wines. The winemaker has an adroit sense of humor and is most entertaining as well as knowledgeable, worth listening to. Want to stay there, but for now the wine and grounds are a blessing.
While having a smaller tasting room than many of the wineries, they were able to accommodate a group of 10 very easily (do call ahead) good wines, beautiful location (tho remote) I loved the old barn that houses the tasting room. the only negative is that they would not let me take the most sweetest cat, Ray Ray home. He is truly loved and will bring you joy holding him.
Would love to have seen it and bought some wine but was closed at 2pm Wed 15 Oct 2014..... :( instead we are off to lunch at Thornton Grill in Sperryville which is open! Shame, we came down off Olg Rag mountain in driving rain to see sharp rocks winery..... :(
The wedding was up on the hill and overlooking the vineyard. The reception was on the flat in a field under a huge tent. Food was provided by 2 food trucks. It was fun and a beautiful place for a wedding.
A great location, great wines and a superb host make for a wonderful rustic, "unplugged" getaway. We've been several times now to the winery and B&B and will keep coming back for the quiet ambiance, wines and hospitality. Trek up Old Rag and come back and soak your feet in the Hughes River while quaffing Jimm's excellent Cab-based Virginia Rose; perfect for a summer day! Grill on the deck of the cottage, watching the sun sink over the mountains. Hike the Shenandoah NP trails. Catch up on your reading, and enjoy the wine dogs and wine cats...you'll be glad you did...
What I liked about Sharp Rock is the very personal feel. This was our last winery for the day, as part of a weekend bachelorette party. Although they were about to close for the day, the staff did not make us feel unwelcome; in fact, they accomodate our group and patiently answered our questions. By the way, the tasting room is upstairs, not on the ground floor. When you enter the building, you initially think you've entered a storage area because what you first see are the wine barrels. Sharp Rock is a nice place to just hang out and enjoy the wine. It feels very peaceful. I would come back again.
loved visiting this vineyard. Many tastings for the $5 price. Bought a couple of bottles to take home, got one cold one to open and eat some meat, cheese and crackers that they had for sale.
It's a hard winery to find near the base of Old Rag. The wine selection is good, although many of the wines tended to have a very mineral-y taste to them which wasn't my favorite. Regardless, a great winery and the owners are extremely nice and accommodating!
My wife and I stayed in the Cottage with a couple of good friends and had a wonderful time. We arrived on Friday after the tasting room had closed and Jimm was gracious enough to open the tasting room for us and let us sample his wines. As with each time we have been there before, the wines were outstanding. The Cottage was definitely an awesome get away and the absence of television and cell service didn't bother us one bit! We will definitely bring a fishing rod next time to try and get a trout from the river running through the property. We make Sharp Rock Vineyards a regular stop each time we head towards Sperryville to sample the wines from the many vineyards in that area. Without a doubt, Sharp Rock is our favorite vineyard in that area. Jimm and Kathy are wonderful hosts and the wines are excellent. We will be back soon!!
We stopped by on a Cold Saturday in Feb and were surprised by the beauty and friendliness. The owner did our tasting so we learned everything about each wine. We had a great conversation with him and felt very welcome. We had a hard time picking which wines to purchase as everything we tasted was above average and most unique.
