It has several miles of beach. You can go on the bayside or oceanside. The boat ramps are on the bayside. It is very shallow. Local knowledge would be a big plus to have before taking a boat out. The oyster beds are visible. The campground is close to the ocean, but you can't see the ocean from the campsites. There is no sewer, but they have very nice showers. We had to change campsites due to reservations. The nicest camp host coordinated the moves for all of us that had to move to a different site. He came to our door the minute our next campsite was ready to tell us we could move. That was a first for us. What a nice thing to do. He kept that place running smooth. The very best place to get shells in the park is a five mile bicycle ride to the east end of the island. The trail is sandy and can be windy. It feels uphill all the way back. The shells are real nice. We also rode our bicycles in town. There were nice bicycle paths. There is a public restroom in the park right in town. Convenient place to park car. I think there is one gas station on the island and a small grocery store. The temperature was cool while we were there. When the wind died down, the no- see-ums came out quickly. There are several very nice beach access areas with restrooms and showers. Good places for an RV to park for the day. Dogs can't go on the beach in the park, but I did see dog beaches in town. This is a great place to kayak. There is a kayak overnight area at one end. There is a large nest there with eagles flying around.
If you come in the winter months hoping to find summer-like weather, you could be really disappointed. Winters here can be really cold and windy, or mild and sunny. The water is too cold to swim in during the winter also.
St. George Island is the perfect getaway for anyone wanting some fun in the sun or peace and relaxation. My husband and our 4 kids camp at the state park at least 5-10 times during the summer months, sometimes more. The campsites are kept very nice and clean and they are probably the best sites out of any that we have camped at in the Florida panhandle. The beach is not too far from the campsites, within walking distance, or you can drive and park in the big lot they have with the restrooms available. Beaches are out of this world beautiful. All the park rangers are nice and friendly and always make us feel welcome. My kids love that we can go down to the beach at night and fish and hang out. Last time we went back in June 2014, there were starfish covering the beach, which was amazing and they loved it so much. If you are looking for somewhere that's not crowded to have a good time with your family, St. George Island State Park is definitely the place to go!
We loved this park and setting. Spectacular really. Unfortunately the weather was cool and it was foggy but that even added an element of fun to the park. Highly recommend for camping.
It was kind of cool the day we visited so walking the beaches was not as pleasant as the nature trail we walked. What a variety of plants. Enjoyed the day.
nice beach with convenient restrooms, grills, vending. Nature trails, camping and nice parking. bay and ocean access.
Our schedule only permitted a drive to Sugar Hill Beach and several stops for photos. Abundant bird life, interesting high dunes covered with plenty of Fall color, spectacular white powder beaches (empty except for shells), beautiful vistas across coves to the mainland, photo ops at every turn. Did not check out any facilities but our host said they were excellent and operated by a first-rate, knowledgeable staff. We need to return.
Here is old Florida barrier island, preserved. Clean with good facilities, but not so much as to detract from the pristine nature here. Excellent!
State park is very nice, good shells, beaches are so desolate, we walked for miles and miles, never seen another person.
this is a must trip over the awesome bridge to the island. The lighthouse is super neat, and there are shops to shop at and restaurants. Super clear beaches and white sand for miles. There are also condos, and other places to stay. makes a super vacation stop for familes or anyone
